Big Second Half Lifts Spartans Over Hood

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team erased an 11-point first half deficit and came roaring back in the second half for a 51-41 victory over Hood at home on Monday night in rescheduled Commonwealth contest from January 10.

Shealyn Ricks led the second-half comeback by scoring 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second stanza as York out-scored the Blazers, 33-18 in the final 20 minutes. Makenna Zimmerman hauled in 12 career-high tying rebounds on the night and Breana Grim rejected three shots for the second time in three games.

Team Records
Hood: 3-12 (0-4 MACC)
York: 5-10 (3-1 MACC)

How It Happened
Hood doubled-up York, 14-7, in the first quarter as the Spartans struggled to get out of their own way by committing more turnovers (8) than points scored (7).

The Blazers went up by 11, their largest lead of the game, 44 seconds into the second quarter, but Hood wound up shooting just 25% from the field which prevented them from maintaining the double-digit lead. The Spartans actually won the quarter, 11-9, and trailed 23-18 at halftime.

The Spartans owned the third quarter and turned the tide in their favor the rest of the way. York racked up a 15-7 scoring margin in the third, while holding the Blazers to just 20% from the field. Breana Grim provided a spark for York as she hauled in four rebounds and tied Lydia Powers for the team scoring lead with five points each in the quarter.

York turned to Shealyn Ricks to close out the game and she delivered 10 points in the final quarter with a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line.

Up Next
The Spartans travel to Stevenson on Wednesday night for a Commonwealth showdown at 6 p.m.
