Ricks Posts Double-Double as Spartans Down Alvernia

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Commonwealth play following a 62-59 victory over Alvernia at home on Wednesday night.

Shealyn Ricks led the way for York with her first career double-double on a team-leading 15 points and 10 rebounds. Breana Grim (14) and Olivia Shutter (13) also posted double-digit point totals, while Alyssa Dougherty pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.

Team Records
Alvernia: 7-7 (2-1 MACC)
York: 4-9 (2-0 MACC)

How It Happened
York struggled to gain traction early on as they shot just 26.3 from the field and trailed Alvernia, 16-11, at the end of first quarter of play. The Spartans flipped the momentum in the second quarter due in large part to an 8-for-10 effort from the free throw line while holding the Golden Wolves to just two made field goals which resulted in York out-scoring Alvernia, 19-7.

The Spartans took a 30-21 lead into the halftime break with Breana Grim leading all scorers with eight points, followed by Olivia Shutter with seven and Shealyn Ricks with five. Ricks also had eight rebounds at the midway break.

York built on their lead as the third quarter unfolded and went up by 12, their largest lead of the night, with 3:58 left on an Alaina Neal layup. The Golden Wolves went on to cut that lead in half late in the third, but a Ricks jumper in the closing seconds put the Spartans up by eight, 46-38, at the end of the period.

The Wolves would not go away quietly in the fourth and came all the way back to tie the game, 51-51, with 1:53 remaining. The Spartans responded with six unanswered points with 25 seconds left and held on for the victory despite the Wolves winning the fourth quarter, 21-16.
