Strong Start Lifts Spartans to Victory Over Albright

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team jumped ahead early and led wire to wire in a 56-46 victory over Commonwealth foe Albright at home on Saturday.

Makenna Zimmerman fueled York's victory with her double-double performance as she hauled in a career-best 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points, four blocked shots and three steals. York also put together one of its best defensive efforts of the season as the Green and White held Albright to season-lows in points (46) and field goal percentage (25.0%).

How It Happened
The Spartans opened the game on an 8-1 run and took a commanding 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. York continued to roll in the second quarter as they doubled-up the Lions, 13-6, to take a 33-13 first-half lead.

Makenna Zimmerman had nine of York's 18 first-half rebounds to go along with six points, while Shealyn Ricks led all scorers with seven. The Spartans shot an impressive 52.2% from the field through the first 20 minutes, while Albright struggled to gain ground behind a 17.1% field goal percentage.

The Spartans kept rolling as the second half got under way and took a 49-23 lead at the end of the third quarter after shooting 50.0% in the third, led by Zimmerman's six points.

Albright made a late push and out-scored the Spartans, 22-7, in the fourth quarter as York went 0-for-9 from the field. York managed to fend off the Lions and close out the win with a 7-for-8 effort at the free throw line in the final quarter.

The Spartans will remain home on Wednesday for a Commonwealth clash with Widener at 6 p.m.

The Spartans are now 6-5 all-time against Albright … York is 5-5 at home this season and the Albright is 5-6 away from their home floor … Makenna Zimmerman now has two double-doubles this season and has double-digit rebounds in four different games.
