Spartans Fall in Nailbiter with Messiah

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team came up one-point shy of remaining unbeaten in conference play following a 50-49 loss to Messiah in a home Commonwealth clash on Saturday.

Neither team led by more than six points in a closely contested battle that came down to the wire. Messiah's Liv Maturo knocked down the game-winning jumper with 26 seconds left while the Falcons stopped the Spartans on their final three possessions to pull off the victory.

How It Happened
York came out strong and went ahead by six with 5:39 left in the first quarter following Makenna Zimmerman's second layup of the game. From that point, the Spartan went scoreless for the remainder of the quarter while Messiah ripped off seven unanswered points to take a 13-10 lead into the first intermission.

The Spartans bounced back in the second quarter and won the quarter, 14-11, as they went into halftime all even with the Falcons, 24-24. York shot a remarkable 50.0% from the field in the second period with Shealyn Ricks leading the way with seven second-quarter points.

The Green and white led over seven minutes in the third quarter, but the Falcons kept the score close as the Spartans wound up with a 38-36 advantage at the quarter's end. York once again shot 50.0% from the field, but did not attempt a single three-pointer which kept the score close as Messiah managed to knock down a pair.

Both teams both 45% or better in the final quarter and swapped the lead five times as they combined for 25 points. York went ahead by one with 2:10 left on an Olivia Shutter jumper and went on to produce back-to-back stops, but unfortunately the Spartans turned the ball over twice during that same span as the clock ticked below 30 seconds.

Liv Monturo knocked down a jumper with 26 seconds left to bring her game-high point total to 21 and put Messiah ahead, 50-49. York still had a prime opportunity to go win the game, but turned the ball over for the third possession in a row which allowed Messiah to escape with the win.
