Box Score 2 YORK, PA – The York College softball squad opened their 2018 home campaign with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern University on a cloudy and brisk Thursday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans won game one 9-1 in six innings and followed with an 8-0 six inning win in the nightcap.
The twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at Eastern but a wet field allowed the Green and White to open their home season a little bit early.

How It Happened
• York opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Eryn Bailey walked with one out. She stole second and then scored on a two-out RBI single from Joanna Marmo.
• The Eagles tied the game in the third inning. Melissa Irick drew a lead-off walk to start the frame. After a strikeout, pinch hitter Alyssa Bolger hit a little flare over the head of pitcher Ginger Lewis to put runners at first and second. After another strikeout, Jess Snader flared a single down the left field line, scoring Irick to tie the game. An error allowed runners to advance to second and third but Lewis got a strikeout to end the threat.
• The game remained tied until the fifth when York exploded for five runs. Shyla Pastore kicked off the inning with a single to left. Then senior Savannah Zittle was allowed to swing away in a bunt situation and the Spartan first baseman responded with a bomb to left field, giving York the 3-1 lead. Freshman Ashley Meekins followed Zittle with a home run of her own to left, pushing the York lead to 4-1. After the Eagles got two outs, Marmo singled to center. She came around to score when Haley Hirn hit a missile deep over the wall in left center as the York lead grew to 6-1.
• York closed out the game in the sixth with a three spot highlighted by a Meekins RBI double to right center. Bailey tripled in Meekins and then scored on an Eagle error to end the game.
• Lewis picked up the win with a career-high 15 strikeouts as she dominated the contest. Her 15 strikeouts broke the school record that was almost ten years old as Megan Mickles struck out 14 at Hood College on April 10, 2008.
