How it Happened:
• The Spartans took immediate control of the game, a battle of two top-10 programs, with three goals in the first three minutes. Just 1:27 into the first half, Meghan Fox found a cutting Regan Cook for the first goal. The Spartans used a similar play, with Fox as the point and multiple Spartans curling across the face of the goal, for a couple scores on the afternoon. Caitlin Rankin scored the second one, taking a pass from Devin Hursey, just 34 seconds later. York picked up the first two draw controls of the game, enabling them to set offensively, and keep the pressure on the Diplomat defense. After York went up 2-0, Franklin & Marshall won the next draw, but Kayleigh Phillips forced a turnover, Alexis Hart scooped the ground ball, and less than a minute later, Cook had her second goal of the game, picking up a loose ball and finishing in the top shelf.
• The three-goal flurry set a tone for the first half, but both teams settled into the game. Almost seven minutes went by before the Spartans scored again, this time on a free-position attempt, when Hursey converted. The Diplomats answered just 18 seconds later, but York built a 4-1 advantage in the opening 10 minutes.
• Fox, who scored four goals in the season-opening win over Montclair State, picked up the ball near midfield, sliced through the defense, sprinting by multiple Diplomats and bounced a shot passed the goalkeeper, extending the lead to 5-1. Just over two minutes later, Hursey scored again on a free-position shot. F&M earned one goal back with 3:24 to play before halftime, but the Spartans took a 6-2 lead into the break.
• York's defense was the story all day, clamping down on the Diplomats. F&M scored 21 goals in its first two games of the season, but were stifled throughout the evening. Nicole Clauter's performance, in particular, was extremely impressive. Clauter, an IWLCA first-team All-American, limited Paige Moriarty, another first-team All-American, to just a single shot and zero points. Moriarty entered the game with seven points on four goals and three assists in just two games, but couldn't muster anything against Clauter and the Spartan defense.
• The Spartans, again, started the half well, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes, getting goals from Rankin and Phillips to go up 8-2. Skye Slater added another goal, on a free-position attempt, helping the Green and White cruise to a 9-4 victory, the first win over Franklin & Marshall in school history.
