How It Happened
• In the bottom of the first inning, after Ginger Lewis disposed Alverno's first three hitters, Shyla Pastore opened the season with a walk, but was caught stealing at second. Eryn Bailey singled immediately after, and then stole second with two outs. Haley Hirn and Ashley Werner walked, loading the bases for freshman Madison Bowen. In her first career at-bat, Bowen ripped a triple, clearing the bases, giving the Spartans an early 3-0 lead in their season opener.
• In the second inning, York managed two base runners, but couldn't muster any runs. Both pitchers were throwing gems, as the Spartans didn't get another hit until the fifth inning. Meanwhile, Lewis was dismantling the Alverno lineup, not allowing a single base runner until the sixth inning and completing a no-hitter, the first of her young career.

How It Happened
• Neither team could get anything going offensively for the first four innings. York was held without a single base runner until the fifth inning when Haley Hirn earned a leadoff walk. Ashley Meekins pitch ran for Hirn, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ashley Werner stepped up and singled to right field, but Meekins wasn't able to score, and stayed at third. The Spartans had a pair of runners in scoring position after Werner stole second. Back-to-back groundouts halted the chance of a lead.
• Both teams were held scoreless through seven innings, despite York getting a leadoff single from Joanna Marmo in the top of the seventh. Due to extra-inning rules, the Spartans started with a runner on second to open the eighth. Werner reached on a sacrifice bunt that also moved Madison Bowen to third. Werner stole second and then Mia Ruffalo reached on a fielding error, scoring Bowen. Werner scored just after that on a sacrifice bunt from Savannah Zittle, giving York a 2-0 lead. The Spartans couldn't hold the advantage, though, allowing three runs in the bottom of the eighth, to fall 3-2 to Augustana.
