Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College Spartan softball squad got shutout 4-0 by the University of Mary Washington in the opening game of the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday morning at Christopher Newport University. Kara Deppe twirled the three hit shutout as she struck out ten Spartans in the win.

How It Happened:
• Both teams had runners in the first. Mary Washington got a single from Hannah Bruns but the Eagles wouldn't be able to get her to second. Savannah Zittle was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first but Kara Deppe got a pair of strikeouts to slow the Spartans down. Deppe walked Carleigh Ruleman but got a strikeout to end the bottom of the first.
• The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the second as Brittnee Haynes doubled with one out in the inning. After a strikeout, Courtney Shea singled down the third base line, scoring Hayes as Shea took second on the throw to the plate. The Eagles added a second run as Amy Sykes doubled to the gap to make it 2-0 UMW.
• Mary Washington tacked on a third run in the top of the third. Hannah Bruns had an infield single to start the rally. She moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Malia Rogers RBI single over the head of shortstop Katie Maloney. The Spartans got out of the inning without any further damage.
• The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom of the third looking to get something going. However, Haley Hirn hit a rocket right at the third baseman for out number two. Ashley Werner then grounded out to end the inning.
• Mary Washington pushed the lead to 4-0 with an unearned run on a Danielle Newman RBI single to left with two outs in the top of the fifth.
• Kara Deppe retired the last seven Spartans she faced as the Spartans never really was able to get any offensive traction late in the game.
Game Notes:
The Spartans fall to 18-39 all-time in the CAC Tournament … York must now bounce back from the loser's bracket as they will face the loser of the Frostburg State/Salisbury first round game at 4:00 pm on Thursday … The Spartans are 1-2 against the Eagles this season … senior Carleigh Ruleman walked twice and hit by a pitch as she did not record an official at-bat … the Spartans had at least one runner on base in each of the first five innings including leaving the bases loaded in the third … the Spartans' three hits were their lowest total in their last 22 games.
