Softball Splits Sunday Twinbill in Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College softball squad split a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Eagles captured game one 7-5 while the Green and White earned the split with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

How It Happened

• The Eagles opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Hannah Hautz tripled to plate the first UMW run. Jessica Huber doubled to center to score Hautz for the 2-0 Mary Washington lead.

• The Green and White answered with a four spot in top of the second. Savannah Galati started the scoring with an RBI single to center. Quinn Fisher then singled to second to score Ashley Werner. Julie Van O'Linda plated the third run with an RBI ground out to short. Savannah Zittle capped the scoring with an RBI double to left as York took a 4-2 lead.

• York made it 5-2 in the top of the third with a Carleigh Ruleman solo home run.

• The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the third with a three spot. Malia Rogers had the big blow in the inning with a two run double.

• Mary Washington closed out the scoring with a two spot in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagle uprising came after the Spartans retired the first two hitters. Hautz singled to right and Rogers singled to short. The runners each moved up 60 feet on a passed ball. Huber then plated both runners with a single to center.

• The Spartans loaded the bases in the top of the fifth but three straight strikeouts ended the inning without York being able to push across a run.

• York loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth and again they came up empty.

How It Happened

• The first inning was action packed as the Spartans started the scoring with a pair of runs in the inning. Haley Hirn had an RBI single while Carleigh Ruleman scored on a wild pitch to give York a 2-0 lead.

• The Eagles got their run in the first as Danielle Newman tripled to center with one out. Hannah Hautz grounded out to second to plate Newman with the Eagle run.

• An Eagle error allowed the Spartans to score in the top of the second as York took a 3-1 lead.

Ashley Werner had an RBI single in the top of the third to give York a 4-1 lead.

• The Eagles got single run in the bottom of the third and another single run in the fourth to draw to within one at 4-3.

• Spartan starter Melissa Jurkiewicz was dominant over the final three innings as she retired the final 10 Eagles she faced to close out the win.

 

SPARTAN NOTES:

The Spartans have split their seasons series for the last two years … York has outscored their opponents 26-13 in the first inning this season … the win in game two was York's first one run win of the year as they are now 1-5 in one-run games … senior Carleigh Ruleman leads the CAC in home runs as she now has blasted eight round trippers for the year … Ruleman is tied for fifth with 23 RBI.

 

UP NEXT:

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they conclude their eight game road trip with a doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg. The twin bill in Middletown is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
