How it Happened:
• The Spartans wasted little time jumping all over the Sea Gulls. It took less than a minute and a half before Kayleigh Phillips took a central pass from Rachel Saks and finished her shot to take a 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, the Spartans were already up 4-0 after a flurry of goals. Meghan Fox scored to go up 2-0 before Devin Hursey converted on a free-position shot. With the score at 3-0, Melissa Meehling juked a defender at the point, leaving her behind as she sprinted toward the goal. She launched a high shot that flew by the goalie to push the lead to four. Salisbury cut the deficit less than a minute later, but York continued their strong push. Katelyn Cattrano scored, then Hursey and Fox scored within three and a half minutes, and all of sudden York was up 7-1. The difference in the opening 11 minutes was the draws. York controlled eight of the first nine draws, and most of those controlled draws turned into goals without Salisbury even touching the ball.
• The 11th-ranked Sea Gulls didn't quit, though. After over eight scoreless minutes, Salisbury scored three quick ones before the half, cutting the deficit to 7-4 at the break.
• After combining for 11 first-half goals, just five were scored in the second. Caitlin Rankin took a pass from Cattrano, who notched an assist in the last nine games, and finished to double up the Sea Gulls, 8-4. Less than a minute late, Skye Slater created separation with a nasty spin move and scored to make it 9-4. With eight minutes left, Salisbury had scored twice to get within three goals at 9-6, but York, in firm control of the game, was able to run some clock before Rankin put the game on ice with 2:55 remaining to win 10-6 and defeat Salisbury for the first time in school history.
