How It Happened

• Both pitchers started well, dismissing their opponents without giving up a single hit in each half of the first inning. Freshman Ginger Lewis recorded three strikeouts for the Spartans in her first inning of work in the circle.

• The Spartan offense exploded in the top of the second after Carleigh Ruleman singled to start the inning. Haley Hirn pushed her to second on a sacrifice bunt before Ashley Werner doubled down the left field line, scoring Ruleman. Werner was thrown out when Kara Hanson grounded into a fielder's choice. After Jordyn Reith walked, Julie Van O'Linda doubled down the right field line, scoring Hanson. Reith and Van O'Linda both scored after Savannah Zittle singled through the left side for two RBI, giving York a 4-0 lead.

• Lewis continued her dominance, and kept the Diplomats hitless through five complete innings with six strikeouts. York, however, continued hitting. In the top of the fourth, the Green and White added another run when Van O'Linda drove in Werner. She was in position to score after Hanson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. In the fifth, Katie Maloney singled to lead off and Ruleman jacked a homer to left field, extending the York lead to 7-0 after five.

• In the top of the sixth, York started to put together a two-out rally, started by Zittle reaching on an error. Maloney singled to put two on base with a chance to end the game with an eight-run advantage, but Joanna Marmo was unable to keep it going, grounding out to the pitcher.

• Lewis' attempt at a no-hitter was lost in the bottom of the sixth, when Kelly Van O'Linda doubled down the left field line. She moved to third when Erin Russell singled. The Diplomats were on the board as the next batter Crystal Good singled, scoring Van O'Linda. Lewis, in a bit of a jam, settled down and turned the next three batters into outs, including a strikeout to end the inning, still up 7-1. They finished the game in the top of the seventh when Werner tripled down the right field line, bringing home Hirn.

How It Happened

• The Spartans started well in the second game following the early victory. Katie Maloney doubled and then moved to third on a wild pitch, creating a scoring opportunity for Carleigh Ruleman, who continued her outstanding day at the plate with a double, driving home Maloney.

• F&M responded in the bottom of the second, knotting things up at one when Katie Wenger homered off of Melissa Jurkiewicz to lead off the inning. That was all the Diplomats could manage, though.

• York was back on the upper hand in the top of the third, loading the bases after Savannah Zittle and Joanna Marmo both singled, and Ruleman was intentionally walked. With just one out the Spartans, however, could not bring anyone home.

• They created more chances in the fourth, with two outs. Julie Van O'Linda doubled to center and then scored when Zittle doubled as well. Maloney made it three consecutive doubles, pushing the ball to left field and scoring Zittle. York led 3-1 through four.

• The Diplomats cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth on three hits, kick started by a one-out triple by Kelly Van O'Linda.

• York again doubled their lead in the top of the sixth. Van O'Linda singled to lead off the inning. She advanced to second and then third on two passed balls. She scored when Zittle drove her home, Zittle's second RBI of the game, making it 4-2.

• With Ginger Lewis in her third inning of work, after pitching all seven innings in the first game, faced some trouble. Wenger homered for the second time of the game, cutting the York lead to 4-3. Ryan Correa then singled and moved to second on an Izzy Schaefer single, still with no outs. The next batter reached on a throwing error, loading the bases for F&M. A double from Van O'Linda scored two, giving the Diplomats a 5-4 lead. But Lewis, a freshman, was able to get three consecutive outs, including two on a fielder's choice.

• Down their final three outs, York needed some offense. Ashley Werner provided a spark, doubling to right center. Werner scored to tie the game when Savannah Galati singled down the right field line. Jordyn Reith laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Mia Ruffalo, in to pinch run for Galati, to second. Two straight fly outs, though, ended the top of the seventh at 5-5.

• Lewis took care of business in the bottom of the seventh before York battled some more at the plate. It was Zittle who started on second due to extra inning rules that reached third on a throwing error. Next up was Maloney, who tripled to right center, scoring Zittle to take a 6-5 lead. Ruleman launched a sacrifice fly that scored Maloney before the end of the inning.

• Lewis was able to get the first out, but faced a second and third situation with still one out. Lewis stuck out Van O'Linda, who was a tough out all day, to get the second out, then doubled down and struck out Erin Russell, finishing off a 7-5 victory for the Spartans.
