How it Happened:
• A theme in both halves was how York was able to start strong. Just 1:04 into the first half, Devin Hursey drew a foul, and converted her free-position shot to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Freshman Meghan Fox then scored two more in 1:09 and York was up 3-0 on the No. 16-ranked Eagles. After Kayleigh Phillips concluded the blitz, the eighth-ranked Spartans led 4-0 with 17:26 left in the first half. The score remained the same until Mary Washington scored twice in the final 2:14 to cut the deficit in half heading into the break. Both of the Eagles' goals came on free-position shots. York had two goals called back because of fouls on the other team just before they unleashed their shots. Conversely, Mary Washington also had a goal reversed.
• Again, a hot start propelled the Spartans to open the second half. Just 42 seconds into the second period, Rachel Saks lifted a pass to Phillips, who seemed to one-time slap the ball into the net. One minute later Fox found a streaking Regan Cook who ripped a shot past the goalie. Just 1:43 into the second half, the Spartans had already notched two more goals, giving them a 6-2 advantage. Caitlin Rankin added to it with 16:31 left when she also took a pass from Fox, and shot a low ball into the net. From there, the two teams traded three goals each, with York responding after each Eagle goal. Skye Slater scored the eighth Spartan goal by completely circling the goal, then stampeding through a gaggle of Mary Washington defenders before shooting from point-blank range. Kelly Curran also notched a goal in the final three minutes, before Saks concluded the Spartan scoring with 20 seconds left while being down a player.
