Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA – The York College softball team opened their 2017 season by splitting a pair of games during day one of their spring trip to Clermont, Florida. The Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision in eight innings in the opener against Brandeis. York rebounded to post an 11-5 win over Augustana in the nightcap.

How It Happened
• Neither team got much offensive traction in the first three innings as starters Ginger Lewis and Scottie Todd took turns mowing down their opposing hitters.
• York opened the scoring in the fourth as Haley Hirn drew a two out walk and came around to score on Carleigh Ruleman's booming double to center.
• Brandeis wasted little time in scoring in the top of the fifth as Allison Hecht opened the inning with a double to left center. Hecht advanced to third but Lewis got the next two hitters but Brianna Urena singled to center, tying the game at one. Lewis got out of the inning without any more damage.
• York loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth but pinch hitter Savannah Galati hit a rocket to first to end the inning.
• In the eighth inning, Brandeis plated the go ahead run when Marissa DeLaurentis drilled a single to center to plate Urena with the go-ahead run.
• The Spartans had two cracks in the bottom of the eighth to get Savannah Zittle home from third base but Todd got a ground out to third and a foul out to the catcher to end the game.

How It Happened
• York got off to a great start in the top of the first. Katie Maloney walked, moved to second on a ground out, stole third and then scored on Joanna Marmo's double to left center.
• The Spartans built on the lead in the second thanks to a big Augustana error. With two outs, Quinn Fisher drew a walk and Ashley Werner reached on an error. Maloney singled down the right field line to score Fisher. Savannah Zittle singled to left, scoring Werner. Maloney came around to score on the play on a Augustana error as the Spartans led 4-0. Zittle stole third and scored on a Marmo's single to left as the Spartans led 5-0.
• York pushed the lead to 6-0 on a Werner RBI single. The damage could have been worse but York stranded a pair of runners at the end of the inning.
• Augustana got on the board in the third courtesy of an RBI double from Madeline McGuire.
• York made it 8-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth. The second run came on a Katelyn Mehrling sacrifice fly.
• Augustana struck for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, cutting their deficit to 8-5. Zayne Blumberg had a two-run triple in the uprising.
• York wasted little time in responding as they plated a trio of runs in the top of the sixth. Carleigh Ruleman had a two-run single while Mehrling had another sacrifice fly to account for the three runs.
SPARTAN NOTES:
The Spartans are now 1-4 in season openers under head coach Jen Petteys, however the Spartans are 4-1 under Petteys in game two of the season … junior hurler Melissa Jurkiewicz picked up her 20th career win with the victory in game two … senior Katie Maloney now has 139 career hits as she ranks seventh on the all-time list … Maloney is five hits out of sixth place (Brittany Malarkey) and 13 spots away from the five spot (Spartan Hall of Famer Joy Byers) … former shortstop Heather Bormann is the Spartans' all-time hit leader with 199 knocks from 2007-10 … senior Carleigh Ruleman picked up her 71st career RBI on Saturday as she now ranks 8th on the all-time list, ten behind Malarkey in 8th place … Maloney ranks sixth on the total bases list with 202 while Ruleman is 8th with 194 total bases … York is now 8-4 all-time in Clermont, Florida.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday in Clermont. The Spartans face Hanover in their 9:00 am game followed by a match-up with Waynesburg at 2:00 pm. York will have Monday off and then face a triple-header of action on Tuesday.
