Spartan Women Sprint Past SVU in Offensive Slugfest

YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball squad sprinted past Southern Virginia, 97-85, in a Capital Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon in York. The 97 points were a season high for York while their 85 points allowed were also a season-high for a Spartan opponent this season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans got off to a good start as they sprinted out to a 13-7 lead midway through the first quarter. The Knight's cut the lead to one at 13-12 but the Spartans ended the quarter on a 12-4 run keyed by a pair of Sam Mocniak three pointers. York shot 45% in the opening quarter while they also held a 13-6 rebounding advantage.

• York opened the second quarter with a 14-7 run as the York lead grew to 39-23 with 6:27 left in the half. The Spartan lead vacillated between 11 and 17 points before Sarah Shearer hit a lay up with 18 seconds left in the half, pushing the York lead to 51-32. Shelby Winsor converted a lay up with two seconds left before the break to provide for a 51-34 halftime lead for York.

• The third quarter displayed the type of offensive production usually reserved for an NBA all-star game as the teams combined for 57 points in the third quarter. York opened the quarter by pushing their lead to a game-high 20 points twice, the second and final time coming on a three-point play by Beth Wiseley with 6:45 left in the quarter. The Spartan lead was 18 with 3:28 left and that's when the Knights fashioned a quick 9-3 run, cutting their deficit to 12 at 76-64. Debria Hendricks hit a lay up before the end of the quarter to give York a 78-64 lead heading to the break. Southern Virginia scored 30 points in the quarter as they went 12-for-20 from the floor including 3-for-4 from three. Merideth Ouellette had 15 points in the quarter including three three-pointers. York shot 10-for-18 in the floor while they also went 3-for-4 from three.

• The Spartan lead remained in double figures until Ouellette hit a jumper at the 8:16 mark, cutting the York lead to 80-71. York quickly pushed their lead back to 13 on a Wiseley jumper but the Knights scored the next five points to cut the lead to just eight (86-78). York ripped off seven straight points, pushing the lead back to 16 at 94-78 with 1:52 left. York would settle for the 12 point win as they have won four of their last five.

York is now 6-1 all-time against the Knights as York has won three straight against Southern Virginia … York is now 9-0 when leading at the half … the 97 points were a season-high, three more than the previous high of 94 against Pitt-Greensburg on Nov. 18 … York is now 5-0 when shooting over 45% from the floor … the Spartans' 10 three pointers are a season-high besting the eight they hit in back to back games against Eastern (11/19) and Goucher (11/22) … York's 26 assists were a season-high for the Green and White … the 51 first half points were a season-high, eclipsing the 49 scored against Pitt-Greensburg … sophomore Beth Wiseley had a career day as she poured in 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor including 4-of-6 from three while she also went 1-for-1 at the line … Morgan Kuehne registered her third 20-point game of her career and first of the season … the Spartans had their first game with a 20 point scorer for the season as both Wiseley and Kuehne reached 20 … Morgan Golec established a new career-high with 12 rebounds … Golec has pulled in 39 rebounds in her last five games … Golec also established a new career-high with five assists … sophomore Katie McGowan established a new career-high with 15 points as she was 5-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line while she also tied her career-high with three steals … York played their second game without the CAC leader in rebounding and blocked shots in Sam Hruz … SVU's Shelby Winsor took advantage of Hruz's absence in the paint as she tallied 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor … senior Brianna Bisci dished out a season-high eight assists while she tied her career-high with three steals in her 26 minutes of work … the Knights outscored York 44-42 in the paint but York had an 18-5 advantage in second chance points … York forced 24 turnovers which they turned into 30 points.
