Maloney Joins 100 Hit Club, Spartans Close Out Spring Trip with a Sweep

CLERMONT, FLA – The York College softball team wrapped up their 2016 spring trip with a pair of wins on Friday. The Spartans bested Mount Union 7-1 in the opener and completed the sweep with a 9-4 win over Webster in the nightcap. In the opener, junior Katie Maloney became the 16th member of the Spartans' 100-career hit club.

How It Happened

• The Spartans opened the scoring with a three spot in the bottom of the second inning. The Spartans got the three runs on a pair of hits and a key Mount Union error.

• The Purple Raiders got on the board in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Jessica Kennedy RBI single.

• York got that run right back into the bottom of fourth as Katie Maloney singled and moved to third on an error by the centerfielder. Maloney then scored on a Savannah Zittle RBI single to left.

• York tacked on another three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Spartans were hit by two pitches in the inning which helped fuel the uprising. Courtney Gall stroked a two run single in the inning for the inning's big blow.

Game One Notes: The Spartans finished the game with seven runs on nine hits with one error while the Purple Raiders had one run on six hits with four errors … Junior Katie Maloney collected her 100th career hit with her fourth inning single to center … She is the 16th Spartan to collected 100 career hits in the history of the program … Maloney is 27 hits away from breaking into the Spartans' top ten hit list …. York pitching has now allowed one or less runs in five of their nine games in 2016.

How It Happened

• The Spartans got on the board early with a two spot in the top of the first. Haley Hirn had an RBI single to left and then scored on a Carleigh Ruleman double to center.

• York pushed it to 4-0 with two more runs in the top of the first as Savannah Zittle singled through the right side to plate a pair of runs.

• Webster tallied their first run of the game in the bottom of the second courtesy of a Katlyn Garza RBI single.

• The Spartans made it 5-1 in the third as Ruleman blasted a solo home run to center, her second home run of the year.

• The Gorloks got two runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of two Spartan errors as both runs were unearned. Tessa Johanning drove in both runs with a two run double.

• The scoring continued in the top of the fourth as Courtney Gall doubled in Katie Maloney with York's sixth run.

• Webster got their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Katelyn Sullens had an RBI single.

• York closed out the scoring in the sixth. Zittle drove in two with another double and Hirn picked up a sacrifice fly to provide for the Spartans' final five-run margin of victory.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans finish their 10-game spring trip with a sweep of Friday's games … The 7-3 start is the best for the Spartans since the 2011 squad went 8-2 over their first ten games of the year … The best ten game start to a season was 10-0 by the 2001 Spartan squad … the 2001 team would go on to earn the program's only NCAA Tournament berth and finish with a school-record 32 wins … the 2001 team did not lose until their 18th game of the season.

What's Next: Today's games conclude the Spartans' 2016 Spring Trip to Clermont, Florida. The Spartans return to action on March 11 when they open their home campaign against Elizabethtown College at Spartan Stadium. First pitch for game one is slated for 3:00 pm.
