Softball Splits Tuesday Florida Twinbill

CLERMONT, FLA – The York College softball team split their two games on a sun splashed Tuesday afternoon in Clermont, Florida. The Spartans dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Rose-Hulman and then rebounded with a 12-1 win over Finlandia in the nightcap.

How It Happened

• The Fighting Engineers got the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Janel Lake led off the inning with single to right center. Lake was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a ground out to second. Jessica Will won the game for Rose-Hulman with a two-out single to right center.

• Rose-Hulman had a threat in the first as they had the bases loaded before the Spartans turned a double play to avert an early Fighting Engineer score.

Haley Hirn got the Spartans' first hit with a single to lead off the second but she would be left standing on first at the end of the inning.

• Rose-Hulman loaded the bases in the third but Melissa Jurkiewicz wiggled out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.

• The Spartans' four hits were spread out as they got singles in the second, fourth, and fifth innings and a double in the sixth.

Game One Notes: The Spartans were shutout on four hits with no errors while Rose-Hulman had a run on seven hits with no errors … The Spartans got shutout for the second time this year … York is now 1-1 in one-run games … York struck out a season-high tying nine times … the Spartans have five doubles coming from five different players … The Spartans have walked just three times in in five games while they have struck out 28 times.

How It Happened

• The Lions opened the scoring in the top of the first as Serena Jaime singled to open the game. She moved to second on sacrifice bunt and scored on a Hillary Brewer single to right field.

• York exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first on the benefit of just three base hits. York had a pair of batters hit by a pitch while the Lions also walked one and committed an error. Miranda Shandy had an RBI single in the inning while Carleigh Ruleman blasted a two-run homer to left.

• York added five runs on a hit and one error in the second inning to put the game away.

• Freshman Jenny Coyle threw the final three innings of the game for the win as she allowed one hit to pick up her first collegiate win.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans got 12 runs on a mere four hits with five walks and three hit batters … The Lions got a run on three hits with two errors … Junior shortstop Katie Maloney is just one hit short of joining the 100 hit club … She will be the 16th Spartan to record 100 career hits … Heather Bormann has the school record with 199 career hits from 2007-2010 … York had only eight hits in the double header but still scored 12 runs … The Spartans drew a season-high five walks after having just three in the previous five games … York stole their first six bases of the year in the game.

What's Next: The Spartans return to action on Thursday, March 3 when they face Wartburg and Hanover during day three of the 2016 spring trip. The Spartans face Wartburg at 9:00 am and Hanover at 11:00 am.
