Spartan Women Roll Past SVU on Senior Day

YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team celebrated senior day in fine fashion with a 101-79 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday in York.

The Spartans conclude the regular season with a record of 19-6 overall including a 13-5 mark in the CAC. The Spartans will be the fourth seed in next week's CAC tournament. The Knights conclude their campaign with a record of 6-19 overall as they are 4-14 in the league.

The Green and White got off to a blazing start as they sprinted out to a 15-2 lead just over three minutes into the game. That margin would be short-lived as SVU went on a 17-2 run of their own to take a 19-17 lead with 1:49 left in the quarter. York outscored the Knights 9-3 over the final 1:31 of the quarter to take a 26-22 lead to the second.

The Spartans blew the game open in the second quarter as the Spartans started the period on a 13-0 run to take a 39-22 lead with 7:08 left in the half. The Knights trimmed the lead to 14 but York responded by putting together at 13-2 run, increasing their lead to 53-28. The Spartans would push the lead to 26 before settling for the 22-point halftime lead.

If York blew the game open in the second quarter, they put it away in the third. The Spartans pushed their lead to a game-high 34 points on three different occasions as the Green and White blitzed the Knights with a second 30-plus point period.

The Spartans put it on cruise control after that as the Spartans reached triple digits on a Sam Mocniak (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis) three with 1:02 left in the game. It is the first 100-point game since November 15, 2014 when York rung up 102 against Cazenovia in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The Spartans were fantastic all day as they narrowly missed setting the single-game assist mark. The Green and White dished out 32 assists in the game, one short of the school record set against Gallaudet on December 3, 2003. The Spartans also made a season-high 11 three-point field goals.

A pair of sophomores led York on Senior Day as Morgan Kuehne (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) each tallied 16 points. Kuehne was 8-for-13 from the floor with seven rebounds, two assist and a steal in her 22 minutes of work. Wagner had 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting including 1-for-1 from three and 1-for-2 from the line. She also dished out a career-high seven assists with just one turnover in the win.

Senior Julianne Lambert (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) made her final regular season home game a memorable one as she poured in a career-high 13 points with five assists, two steals and a blocked shot in her 20 minutes of play. Mocniak was the fourth Spartan in double figures with 13 points as she was 5-for-5 from the floor including 3-for-3 from distance. Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) had another solid game with nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and four steals.

York had all 15 healthy players see at least four minutes of action in the game as 13 players scored.

Southern Virginia was led by Larissa Macfarlane and Kimberly Eads with 16 points each. Merideth Quellette added 15 points while Shelby Winsor was the fourth Knight in double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 49.4% from the field including 42.3% (11-for-26) from three and 10-for-16 (62.5%) from the free throw line. The Knights shot 45.9% from the field, 18.2% (2-for-11) from three and went 21-for-25 (84%) from the free throw line.

York made 12 more field goals than the Knights and nine more threes. SVU held an 11-point margin in free throws made. York finished the game with a 46-35 edge on the glass which led to a 24-10 advantage in second chance points.

The Spartans forced 20 turnovers which they turned into 32 points.

Prior to the game the Spartans honored their two seniors, Lambert and Alia Smith (Brinklow, Md./Sherwood), for their contributions to the Spartan program. The duo has been a part of 77 wins in their Spartan careers.

York will open the Capital Athletic Conference tournament at home on Tuesday evening when they host Salisbury University in a first round tournament game tipping at 6:00 pm in Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
