Box Score 2 YORK, Pa. – The York College volleyball team won both their matches on day two of the York College Spartan Volleyball Classic as they defeated Albright College 3-0 in their first match and King's College 3-1 in their second match on Saturday at Wolf Gymnasium.
With the two wins Saturday, the Spartans improve to 8-12 on the season while the Albright College Lions fall to 3-9 and the King's College Monarchs drop to 12-4.
York picked up right where they left off from last night. The Spartans won the 17 of the first 21 points of the first set against Albright and their largest lead of the set was 22-6. After the Lions scored three straight points, the Spartans scored the final two points to close out the set 25-10.
The Spartans' hot streak continued into the second set. After dropping the first point, York won 16 of the next 18 points. Although Albright played well the rest of the set, outscoring York 13-9 from that point on, it was not enough as the Spartans took the second set 25-14.
The third set was much closer than the first two as Albright seemed to find their grove on offense early on. However, leading 13-10, the Spartans used a 9-2 run to pull away from the Lions for good. The Spartans won the third set 25-15.
The Spartans were a well-oiled machine in their match against Albright. Freshman Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion) had a team-high 11 kills to go along with an astronomical .556 attack percentage, one assist and one service ace. Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa. / Southern Lehigh) had a solid all-around match finishing with a team-high 25 assists, three service aces, and 12 digs. Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) was the defensive anchor for the Spartans, finishing with a team-high 22 digs.
The Spartans' largest deficit was just one point in the match when they trailed the Lions 1-0 to begin the second and third set. As a team, the Spartans finished with 35 kills with an attack percentage of .206 and eight service aces.
The first set against King's College was more of the same from York. Both teams were neck and neck for the first 16 points of the game with York clinging to a 10-6 lead. The Spartans then went on a 10-1 run to put the first set out of reach and scored the final four points of the set to take it 25-10.
The second set was a test to see who could make more runs. With the set tied at three, the Monarchs went on an 11-4 run to take a 14-7 lead but York responded immediately with a 6-1 run to pull within two. Both teams then exchanged 5-0 runs late. With the Monarchs leading 24-20, the Spartans answered with three quick points but King's quickly put an end to the Spartans' comeback hopes and won the final point of the set, winning 25-23. This snapped a seven set winning streak by the Spartans dating back to last night's match against Alvernia.
The Spartans responded strongly in the third set. Trailing 4-2, York went on a 13-2 run to take a 15-6 lead. Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md. / Long Reach) had three perfectly placed kills in a row to set the tone for the Spartan run. The Monarchs tried to stay within striking distance and pulled to within seven points at 21-14. The Spartans finished the set on a 4-1 run to win the set 25-15.
In the fourth set, the Spartans got out to an early 10-8 lead. The Monarchs really showed their mental toughness though as they went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. The teams went back and forth then, leading 20-17, the Monarchs closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take the fourth set 25-18.
In the decisive fifth set, both teams looked poised early on. But with both teams tied at three, the Spartans went on a 10-0 run to effectively end the set and the match. The Spartans finished off the set winning by a score of 15-6.
Spartan sophomore Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md. / Hereford) led the way for the Spartans as she tied her career-high in kills with 16 and set a new career-high for attack percentage with a .441. Wukitch set a career-high for herself as she contributed 48 assists and had a solid attack percentage of .214. Dorsey finished the match with 10 kills and a .182 attack percentage. Graziano led the way on defense for the Spartans with 30 digs.
The Spartans finished the match with 55 kills, six service aces, and an attack percentage of .213.
The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wesley to take on the Wolverines at 7:00 pm in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
