Day Two of Gene Cusic Classic Equals Another Spartan Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FT. MYERS, FLA – The York College softball team continued their 2015 spring trip at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida with a split of their day two games. York blanked Wartburg 4-0 in the opener before falling to Bluffton, 6-3, in the nightcap.

The Spartans are 2-2 overall. Wartburg is now 0-3 while Bluffton improves to 4-0 with the victory over York.

In the opener, freshman Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) was outstanding as she twirled a two-hit shutout. Martin allowed a lead off single in the bottom of the first and a fifth inning single in the shutout. She finished with five strikeouts and no walks in her first collegiate shutout.

The Spartans would get Martin all the offense she would need in the top of the first. Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) walked to open the game. She was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) RBI ground out.

The Green and White added a run in the top of the third thanks to a pair of Knight errors and a Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) sacrifice fly. The Spartans got single insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 4-0 win.

Maloney led the Spartans with a hit, two RBI and a run scored. Cristuado scored a pair of runs for York while Hill was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Megan Martin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) also had a hit and an RBI for the Green and White.

Erica Countryman and Kirby Meyer each had singles for Wartburg.

Kimberly Wedeking suffered the loss for Wartburg as she allowed four unearned runs on four hits in seven innings of work. Wedeking was not helped by her defense as the Knights committed three errors in the loss. Wedeking struck out five and walked two.

In the nightcap, the Beavers jumped on the Spartans with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Bluffton got their two runs on three hits in the inning.

York answered in the bottom of the third as Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) blasted a solo home run to left center. The blast was Ruleman's first of the year.

York tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Ruleman stroked an RBI through the left side to score Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) with the Spartans' second run of the game.

The Beavers recaptured the lead in the fifth thanks to a Spartan throwing error in the frame. Bluffton hit the Green and White with a three-run sixth inning to seize control of the game. The big blow in the inning came off the bat as Josie McElroy had a two run single up the middle to give the Beavers at 6-2 lead.

York got a run back in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a pair of Bluffton errors but the Green and White couldn't make it really hurt as they left two runners stranded in the frame. York wouldn't be able to muster a rally in the seventh as they went in order.

Jessie Madiza earned the win in relief for the Beavers. She tossed 2.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with a strikeout. Madiza improved to 1-0 with the win. Emily Scupholm earned the save as she pitched a perfect seventh inning. Emily Kolezynski started and did not earn a decision as she threw 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Courtney Martin suffered the loss as she allowed six runs, five earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of action.

The Beavers had four players record multiple hits in their win. Makenzie Schmidt was 2-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot. Jess Kuzara was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. McElroy was 1-for-1 with the two RBI.

Ruleman had two of the Spartans' four hits, as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI including her first round tripper of the year.

The Spartans continue their trip on Tuesday morning when they face Mt. St. Mary (NY) in their 9:00 am opener followed by a game against Northland at 1:00 pm.
