Box Score 2 FREDERICK, MD – The York College softball squad played their first game in 13 days as they traveled to Hood College for a non-conference twin bill on Thursday. The Spartans picked up where they left off at the end of their Florida trip as the Spartans swept the Blazers on a sunny but cold afternoon.
York won game one 5-1 and completed the sweep with a 13-5 five-inning victory in the nightcap.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the opener as they plated single runs in the top of the first and second innings. The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the second but the Green and White put the game away with a three run fifth inning. The uprising was keyed by back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles from Taylor Hensley (Abington, Md./Bel Air), Megan Martin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern).
That would be more enough for Spartan ace Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) as she twirled a complete game two-hitter. She allowed one run with six strikeouts and no walks as she improves to 7-4. Kayli Paugh suffered the loss for the Blazers as she allowed five runs, three earned, on 14 hits with two strikeouts and a walk. She is now 1-3 with the loss.
Sophomore Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) powered the Spartan offense as she banged out three hits with a run scored in the win. Hensley added two hits, a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Ruleman and Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) each had two hits and a run scored while Ruleman also had an RBI.
Jess Sedgwick had the Blazers lone RBI with her second inning home run.
In the nightcap, York jumped out to a 4-0 after their first at-bat. Ruleman had a two run double for the big blow in the inning.
The Blazers got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first but the Green and White ripped off four more runs in the top of the second to take an 8-1 lead. York tacked on three in the top of the third, pushing the lead to 11-1. The Blazers chipped away with a four spot in the bottom of the third before York closed out the scoring with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Megan Martin banged out a career-high four hits while she added three RBI and two runs scored. Ruleman was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Maloney continues her torrid pace as she had three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Savannah Zittle (Port Deposit, Md./Catholic High School of Baltimore) contributed three hits, three runs scored and an RBI in the victory.
The 18 hits were a season high for the Green and White while their five doubles also set a season best mark.
Kristen Scott led Hood, as she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kristy Erfurdt and Ashley Fourcade also had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for York.
Melissa Jurkiewicz (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) earned the win in relief as she threw three innings, allowing four runs on five hits, as she is now 1-0. Courtney Martin started the game and allowed a run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings as she was lifted with an 8-1 lead.
Sophia Leaman started the game and allowed eight runs, four earned, on nine hits in two innings of work. She falls to 0-4 with the loss. Beth Laque relieved Leaman and didn't fare much better as she allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits with two walks in three innings of action.
The Spartans improve to 8-4 with the two wins, return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Gettysburg to face the Bullets in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
