St. Mary's Edges Spartans in Soggy CAC Match

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference loss to St. Mary's on a soggy Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary's City, MD.

The Spartans fall to 8-4-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the CAC while the Seahawks improve to 8-5-2 and 5-2 in the league.

The teams were even all game long but the Seahawks got the only goal they would need in the 40th minute. Teresa Paz dribbled down the right sideline before negotiating her way into the box. Paz sent a short pass to an on-rushing Liz Mosher and Mosher chipped the ball top shelf to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The teams had four shots each in the first half with three of the Seahawk chances coming on target including Mosher's goal. The Spartans would have a 7-5 margin in total shots in the second half but freshman goalkeeper Sydney Larkin was up to the task as she registered five second half stops.

York's best scoring chance came in the final minute of the game as Jordan Snook (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) drilled a header that Larkin snatched out of the air to preserve the win.

Larkin earned the shutout win with six saves. Spartan netminder Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) made three saves and allowed the one St. Mary's goal in her 90 minutes of work.

York outshot their hosts 11-9 including 6-4 in shots on goal. The Seahawks held a slight 5-4 margin in corner kicks.

Seahawk Stadium has been a house of horrors for the Green and White as they fall to 1-11-1 all time in St. Mary's City.  The only Spartan victory came with a 5-2 triumph on September 18, 2004.

The Spartans will need to bounce back quickly as they look to earn a home field contest in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Green and White hosts Salisbury on Saturday in a key conference contest. Kick off is slated for 12:30 with the contest being preceded by Senior Day ceremonies honoring the eight Spartan seniors.
