YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer squad saw their three-game win streak come to an end with a 2-1 setback against Franklin & Marshall in the teams' annual Route 30 rivalry game.
The Diplomats scored two goals in the second half to steal the road win.
York is now 3-2 overall while the Diplomats are 3-1.
How It Happened
• York had the first best chance of the night as they drew a free kick just over 15 minutes into the game.
Abby Brown hit a brilliant free kick and nearly found
Meg Kalthof streaking into the right side of the box. Unfortunately for York, Kalthof's header was just over the bar for a harmless Diplomat goal kick.
• F&M had a pair of strong chances midway through the half. The first chance came with 22:46 left in the half as Emerson McDonald had a breakaway chance before the play could become settled. She turned and fired but
Joss Metz was there for the stop. The second chance came just over a minute later as Colleen Ferrarese played a long cross in front of the box. Zoe Warne collected the chance and her shot was just wide back across the face of the goal.
• Spartans broke the scoreless tie in the 32
nd minute of play as Brown played a ball up to the top of the box that was settled by
Carissa Baugus. She flicked the ball to Kalthof who hit a brilliant strike inside the upper right 90 for the 1-0 Spartan lead.
• The Spartans almost made it 2-0 on a corner kick in the 37
th minute as the Diplomats had to get a defender clear the ball off the line on a
Carly Vincent shot that looked like it was headed to the back of the net.
• The Spartans out shot the Diplomats 9-6 in the opening half with both teams putting five shots on goal. York held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
• York had a great first chance just over six minutes into the second half as
Mackenzie Hanley hit a header shot off the cross bar on a Baugus corner as the Diplomats avoided falling down two goals.
• That proved to be big as the Diplomats got the equalizer 13 minutes later on a miscommunication in the Spartan defensive box. The Spartans came out to challenge a ball that neither Spartan would be able to coral. Ellison Errington made the play as her pressure forced the misplay and she collected the loose ball to tie the game at one. The goal was Errington's third of the year.
• The Diplomats took their first lead of the game in the 71
st minutes as Ferrarese hit a cross from the left wing that flew across the goal mouth. Katie Boujoukos found the ball on her foot in the right wing and she deposited home the chance for the 2-1 Diplomat lead.
• F&M controlled the majority of the second half. They out shot the Spartans 7-4 including 6-1 in shots on goal.
• For the game, both teams had 13 total shots but the Diplomats put 11 of those 13 chances on goal while York had just six chances on net. Both teams concluded the match with five corner kicks.
