YORK, PA – On a picturesque Wednesday afternoon in south
central Pennsylvania, the York College women's lacrosse team
celebrated Senior Day in superb fashion as they captured a 15-6
triumph over visiting Frostburg State. Seniors Courtney
Heller (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin), Kelly Vrana
(West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), and Meg
Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) closed out their
Spartan home careers as the Green and White now stand at 8-5 for
the 2010 season while the Bobcats drop to 6-5.
The Green and White did a majority of their damage during the first
half, tallying 12 of their 15 scores within the first 30
minutes.
York would only allow their guests once first half goal, an
Elisabeth Hildebrand notch just 1:31 into the game, as starting
goalkeeper Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston)
and the Spartan defense played exceptionally well.
After Hildebrand's early tally, York's offense would
respond by exploding with 15 straight scores over an extended 28:33
span – a spurt which spilled into the second half.
Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough)
proved the main contributor to that run as she posted a huge day
for the Green and White. The rookie attack tallied five goals,
increasing her season total to 26, while also dishing out a pair of
assists.
The beat goes on for freshman standout Kimmy Wayson
(Harwood, Md./Southern) as she recorded a trio of scores.
Wayson now stands at 49 goals for the 2010 campaign, a mere 12 away
from the Spartan single-season scoring record. (Brianna Yapps
and Alison Napolitano currently share the record with 61).
Play slowed for the Spartans midway through the second half as the
Bobcats recorded the game's final five tallies. However, the
Spartan advantage was never in danger.
Aiding her scoring prowess, Schultz went 3-for-4 on free position
shots while she also collected a draw control and caused a
Frostburg turnover. Foy played a terrific contest on her Senior
Day, scoring twice and causing a game-high four turnovers.
Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) also notched two scores while Ashley Kanzler
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), Lauren Kula
(Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), and
Kasie White (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) each
added one.
Defensively, Vrana collected five ground balls for the Green and
White. Heller recorded a caused turnover and played excellent
one-on-one defense as she did not allow her main responsibility,
Frostburg's Ali Kapustin, to score. Evans amassed six saves
as she played the first 30 minutes in the Spartan net to capture
the victory. Tina Nicklas (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) relieved Evans to start the second frame
and made eight stops.
For the Bobcats, Taylor Cassatt posted three points on two goals
and one assist while picking up five ground balls. Davia Procida
also secured five ground balls while Rachel Frank and Jenny Davis
each registered two draw controls. Tori Butts suffers the loss in
the Bobcat goal as she made five saves over her 60 minutes of
work.
With their home slate now complete, the Spartans hit the road for
their final two contests of the 2010 regular season. York visits
Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley on Sunday, April 11, in a
1:00 p.m. tilt from Dover, Del. before finishing up with a trip to
Marymount, another CAC opponent, on April 14 at 8:00 p.m.
