BRIDGEWATER, VA – The York College softball squad suffered
their second consecutive doubleheader sweep as the Bridgewater
Eagles took the broom to the Spartans, beating York 7-4 and 4-0 in
a non-conference twin bill on a sunny Monday in Bridgewater, VA.
The Eagles improve to 18-7 overall while the Spartans, losers of
four straight, fall to 24-6 overall.
In game one, the Eagles got on the board first as they tallied a
pair of runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of a Leah
Cossentino RBI double and a Lauren Childress RBI single.
Bridgewater pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth
and then put the game away with a three run bottom of the fifth.
York cut into the Bridgewater lead with a four run top of the
sixth. Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) plated two runs with a two-run single. Senior
catcher Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick)
scored the other two runs with her two-run single.
The Spartans threatened in the top of the seventh but left two
runners stranded as they lost their third straight for the first
time this year.
Heather Jenkins earned the win as she allowed four runs on six
hits with five strikeouts and three walks in her 6.1 innings of
work. Jenkins improves to 5-1 with the victory. Lindsay Lam picked
up her first save of the year as she got the final two outs for the
Eagles.
Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on
seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in her four innings of
work. She falls to 5-3 with the loss.
Childress led the Eagles as she was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a
run scored. Hillary Rees added two hits, an RBI and a run scored
while Cassie Thompson was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run
scored. Angela Spinelli chipped in with two hits and two RBI in the
win.
Junior Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) was the only Spartan with multiple hits as she
was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Van Meter was 1-for-4 with two RBI
and a run scored while Norris was 1-for-1 with two runs batted in.
Game two saw the Spartans threaten to get something going in the
first two innings. However after Norris bounced into a double play
in the top of the second, Bridgewater pitcher Summer Ramsey retired
13 straight Spartans. When the streak started, the teams were
locked in a scoreless tie. By the time Michelle Barwick
(Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) singled with two outs in the
sixth, the Green and White trailed 4-0.
Spartan ace Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas
Stone) suffered her second straight loss as she allowed
four runs, three earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in 4.1
innings of work. She falls to 19-3 with the loss.
Ramsey earned the shutout win as she scattered three singles in
her seven innings of work as she improves to 3-0. She struck out
two and did not walk a batter during her outing.
Cossentino led the Eagles as the shortstop was 2-for-3 with
three RBI while Hillary Rees was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and
an RBI.
Barwick was two-thirds of the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-3
while Smith had York's other hit in the game.
The Spartans look to get back on the winning side of the ledger
on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Wesley College for a
Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game one in Dover,
Delaware is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
