ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College women's
lacrosse team suffered an 11-9 overtime loss at St. Mary's
Saturday in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt. With the loss, the
Spartans fall to 7-5 overall on the year and drop to 1-4 in
conference play. The host Seahawks improve to 4-7 and 2-2 in
league action.
York trailed for a majority of the contest, finding themselves
down three at 9-6 with 13:54 remaining in the game.
Undaunted, the Spartans continued to battle. Meg Foy
(Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) brought York to within
two as she tallied her 13th off a Kasie White
(Glen Burnie, Md./North County) assist. Foy's notch
left York with a manageable 9-7 deficit with 11:10 left.
Both squads went cold offensively for the next 10 minutes as
neither York or St. Mary's could find the back of the net.
That trend would change however, when freshman sensation
Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) notched her
fifth of the day to bring the Spartans to within one at 9-8 with
only 1:47 showing on the clock.
A mere 47 seconds later, Wayson tied the game for York when she
converted on a free position shot with only a minute remaining.
That was the first time the game was tied since it was 3-3 with
11:23 to play in the first half. Wayson's goal would send the
contest into overtime as the Spartans seemed to have the momentum
going into the extra session.
However, that momentum would not turn into goals for the Spartan
side. Just 1:17 into the six-minute overtime, Aubrey Mirkin tallied
her 14th goal of the season, this one coming from a
Lauriann Parker assist.
Not a sudden-victory situation, Spartan rookie Katie
Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop Spalding) won the ensuing
draw control and York ended up having a pair of scoring chances
before the teams switched sides after three minutes of action.
However, one shot sailed high while Seahawk netminder Jamie Roberts
recorded the save on the other.
The latter three minutes saw the home squad add another tally as
Lauren Bennett provided the insurance goal via an Aubrey Mirkin
helper with only 26 seconds to play.
For the game, both teams recorded 23 shots while St.
Mary's picked up 16 ground balls to York's 12. The
Spartans did nab 14 of the 24 draw controls.
Erin Shackelford paced the Seahawk offense as she notched three
goals and one assist. Mirkin scored twice and added two helpers
while Bennett also recorded a pair of scores. Roberts made seven
saves to pick up the victory in the Seahawk goal.
The Spartans were led by Wayson's six goals while she
secured two draw controls. Foy notched a pair of scores while
Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) also
tallied. Additionally, Schultz posted four draw controls and four
ground balls while causing two turnovers. Kelsey Evans (Bel
Air, Md./Fallston) played all 66 minutes in the Spartan
net as she made seven stops.
Despite the loss, Wayson continues to be an offensive. She now
has now scored a nearly unbelievable 46 goals in just her freshman
season, which already ranks fourth in season goals, with still
three regular season games left to play.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, April 7, when they
host Frostburg St. in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference tilt. Prior to the
contest, the Spartans will celebrate Senior Day honoring Foy,
Courtney Heller (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin), and
Kelly Vrana (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the
Baptist).
