SALISBURY, MD – The York College softball squad had a day
that they had been looking forward to turn into a day they would
rather forget on Saturday. The Spartans traveled to #19 Salisbury
University in a showdown of the two top teams in the Capital
Athletic Conference. The showdown turned into a Salisbury sweep as
the Spartans lost two games in a row for the first time in the 2010
season.
The Sea Gulls edged the Spartans 3-2 in eight innings in the
opener and then left no doubt in the nightcap as they registered a
7-1 victory.
Salisbury improves to 21-2 overall and 8-0 in the CAC while the
Spartans fall to 24-4 overall and 5-3 in the CAC.
The Spartans got off to a great start in game one as
Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) drove
in fellow senior Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem,
Pa./Liberty) with a one-out RBI single.
The Sea Gulls tied the game in the bottom of the second courtesy
of a Kristin Lord RBI single to center.
York recaptured the lead in the fifth as Brittany
Schlorff (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the inning off
with a single down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt moved
Schlorff to second and she then went to third on a Michelle
Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) single up the middle.
Barwick stole second before Bormann laid down a beautiful suicide
squeeze, scoring Schlorff with the Spartans' second run. The
inning then short-circuited for York as Barwick was thrown out at
home in a double steal attempt. After Kristen Gray
(Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) drew a walk to put
Spartans at first and second, Salisbury pitcher Kelly Leary got out
of the frame with a strikeout.
The Spartans hung on to the lead until the bottom of the
seventh. The Sea Gulls got to Spartan pitcher Corrine
Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) with two
singles and a walk with one out in the inning. Majczan then walked
Brittany Lounge to force in the game-tying run. It didn't
look good for the Spartans to get to extra innings but Majczan
collected herself and got Lauren Brenneman and Ali Ritter on a pair
of fly outs to get the Spartans to extra innings.
The Spartans wasted a golden chance in the top of the eighth as
they had runners at second and third with nobody out and they
failed to score. They had a runner thrown out a home, a strikeout
and a ground out to third as the lack of execution would not go
unpunished by the Gulls.
Salisbury won the game when Michelle Gravhadl lifted a sacrifice
fly to deep center, scoring pinch runner Taylor Webb for the 3-2
Salisbury win.
Leary went the distance for the win as she improves to 11-0. She
allowed two runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in
eight innings of work.
Majczan suffered the loss as she allowed two runs, one earned,
on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 5.2 innings of
work. She falls to 5-2 with the setback.
Lord led the Salisbury offense as she was 2-for-3 with a run
scored and an RBI. Gravhadl went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Lounge
had the other Sea Gull run batted in.
The Spartan offense has chances all game long as they stranded
11 runners in the game. Barwick was 2-for-3 while Bormann was
1-for-3 with two RBI. Schlorff was the other Spartan with multiple
hits as she was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Game two started well for York as they led 1-0 courtesy of
another first inning run. That lead would be short lived as the Sea
Gulls scored two in the bottom of the second and three more in the
bottom of the third. The Gulls capped the scoring in the fourth
with two more tallies as the game was not in doubt after the
three-run third.
Erika Brittingham earned the win in the circle for Salisbury as
she improves to 9-0. She allowed an unearned run on eight hits with
a walk in her 6.1 innings of work. Leary came into the game with
one out in the seventh as she got the final two outs of the game
for Salisbury.
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas
Stone) suffered the loss as she falls to 19-2. She allowed
five runs, three earned, on four hits with a walk and a strikeout
in 3.1 innings of work.
Ritter and Carly Read led the Sea Gull offense. Read was 2-for-2
with two RBI while Ritter was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Gravhadl was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Gulls.
Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) and Therres each went 2-for-3 to pace the
Spartan offense. Bormann had the Spartans' lone RBI while
Lawrence scored York's lone run. York did collect eight
hits in the game as they stranded seven in the contest.
The Spartans stranded 18 runners for the day. The Spartans went
just 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position in the 15 innings of
play on Saturday.
The Spartans will attempt to get back on the winning side of the
ledger on Monday afternoon when they travel to Bridgewater College
to face the Eagles in a regional twin bill. Game one is slated for
a 2:00 pm start.
