SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University Sea Gull softball
squad won their 14th consecutive Capital Athletic
Conference championship as they downed the York College Spartans
5-2 in championship game on Sunday in Salisbury, Maryland.
The Sea Gulls, winners of 29 straight, improve to 29-2 while the
Spartans, who are now 0-4 against Salisbury this season, fall to
33-8 for the season.
The Sea Gulls opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom
of the third. Some shoddy Spartan defense played a key role in the
Sea Gull uprising. An error on a sacrifice bunt led to two of the
three runs in the frame being unearned.
York got one of those runs back in the fourth as Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled
through the left side with two outs. Sophomore Britt
Schlorff (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro Horsham) doubled to left
center, ending a 16-inning scoreless streak against the Sea
Gulls.
Salisbury responded with two more runs to take the 5-1 lead
through four innings of play.
The Spartans added one run in the top of the seventh as
Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) doubled with
one, moved to third on a Hannah Hugel (Paoli,
Pa./Conestoga) single to short and scored on a
Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) RBI
fielder's choice.
Kelly Leary improved to 16-0 overall as she allowed two runs on
five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in her seven
innings. Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas
Stone) suffered the loss as she allowed three runs, just
one earned, on seven hits in her five innings of work. Therres
falls to 24-5 for the year. Freshman Corrine Majczan
(Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) tossed the fourth
inning, allowing two runs on three hits in her one inning
stint.
Ali Ritter led the Salisbury offense as she was 2-for-3 with two
RBI. Brittany Lounge added two hits, two RBI and a run scored while
Michelle Gravhadl added two knocks for the Gulls. Kelly Waskewicz
added a hit, two runs scored and an RBI.
Schlorff was 1-for-3 with her RBI double while Smith was 1-for-3
with a run scored.
The Spartans conclude their 2010 season next weekend as they
have a pair of doubleheaders. York travels to Shenandoah on
Saturday and then concludes the season with a doubleheader at home
against Misericordia.
