SALISBURY, MD  - The second seeded York College Spartan softball squad advanced to the championship round of the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament with a 3-0 win over Stevenson University on Saturday in Salisbury. The Spartans now must defeat top seeded Salisbury twice on Sunday to capture their first CAC Tournament title.

The Spartans improve to 33-7 as they have now broken the school record for victories in season, besting the 2001 squad's 32 wins. The Mustangs fall to 18-14 overall as four of their losses have come to the Green and White.

York threatened in the second as they had a runner thrown out at the plate and left two runners stranded as the game remained scoreless through two innings. The Green and White broke the scoreless deadlock in the third as Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) reached on a Stevenson error. She was sacrificed over to second and moved to third on a Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) single through the left side of the infield. Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) plated Hugel with an RBI ground out to second.

Hugel manufactured a run with the help of the Mustang defense in the fifth. She reached on another fielding error, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Therres capped the scoring with a lead off home run in the bottom of the sixth, providing the Spartans for their final margin of victory.

Therres twirled her ninth shutout of the year as she improves to 24-4 overall. She allowed four hits and struck out five as she did not walk a batter in her seven innings of work.

Julianne Roper was the hard-luck loser for the Mustangs as she allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits with no walks or strikeouts in her six innings. She falls to 7-6 with the loss.

Junior Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had four of the Spartans' seven hits as they each went 2-for-3. Therres was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, as her home run was her fourth of the year.

Lisa Bilski had the Mustangs' lone extra base hit with her first inning double. Elizabeth Moul, Sara Dimeglio, and Stacey Rouse each had a single for the Mustangs.

The Spartans now face Salisbury for the fourth time this season on Sunday at noon. The Green and White must defeat the 10^th ranked Sea Gulls twice to capture the crown. If necessary, game two will follow at 2:00 pm.
