YORK, PA – The York College softball squad rolled to a 9-3
Capital Athletic Conference tournament victory over the University
of Mary Washington on a sun splashed Thursday afternoon in
York.
The Spartans improve to 32-6 as they advance to the weekend in
the double elimination tournament 2-0. The Eagles fall to 9-25-1
overall while they are now 1-1 in the tournament.
After going one-two-three in the bottom of the first, the
Spartans used an Eagle error to kick start a second inning rally.
Junior Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) reached on a fielding error with one out. Senior
Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) next ripped
a triple to left center on an 0-2 pitch to plate Smith with the
first run of the game. Lawrence scored when Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) laid down a
beautifully executed suicide squeeze as the Spartan lead grew to
2-0. With two outs, Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) doubled to right center and then
scored when senior catcher Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) ripped a single up the middle.
The Eagles answered with one run in the top of the third as
Danielle Cunetta doubled to lead off the inning. She came around to
score on a single to short by Brandee Adams.
The Spartan lead remained two runs until the big bottom of the
fifth. Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick
Memorial) had a two run triple in the frame while Smith
added a three run bomb off the scoreboard as the Spartan lead grew
to 8-1.
The Eagles knocked Therres from the game in the sixth but
freshman Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) came in to get York out of the inning with just
two runs of damage.
Therres picked up the win as she improves to 23-3 overall. She
tossed five-plus innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with
one strikeout. Majczan allowed two hits with three strikeouts in
her two-inning stint.
Annie Blaine absorbed the loss as she allowed three unearned
runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Cunetta allowed six runs
on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3.2 innings of
action.
Smith led the Spartans offense with her first home run of the
year. She was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Lawrence and
Norris each had two hits while Norris drove in two runs. Lawrence
plated one run and scored another. Bormann was 1-for-4 with two
RBI.
Adams and Kaitlin Petrella each had a pair of knocks and an RBI
for the Eagles. Amanda Adams also had an RBI for Mary
Washington.
The Spartans will face nationally ranked Salisbury on Saturday,
April 17 in a battle of the tournament's two undefeated
teams. The winner of that contest advances directly to Sunday to
play for the CAC championship. The loser of that contest will again
play on Saturday at 3:00 pm. Mary Washington will face an
elimination game on Saturday against Stevenson at 1:00 pm in
Salisbury.
