YORK, PA – The York College softball squad posted a 5-3
Capital Athletic Conference Tournament first round victory over
Stevenson University on a misty Tuesday afternoon in York. The
Spartans improve to 31-6 overall while the Mustangs fall to 16-13
for the campaign.
The game was crisply played early on as there was just one base
runner in the first inning and a half. That changed in the bottom
of the second as Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) drew a lead off walk. After a Kelly Smith
(Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) sacrifice moved
pinch runner Desiree Halaka (Southampton,
N.Y./Southampton) to second and a strikeout, pitcher
Brittany
Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) jacked a giant
two-out, two-run homer to deep left, giving the Spartans the early
2-0 lead. The home run was the second tape measure shot for Therres
this year.
The Mustangs knotted the score at two in the fourth. Carianne
Sullivan and Lisa Bilski had back-to-back singles to put runners at
first and second. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to
second and third, Jessica Bandzwolek drove home Sullivan with an
RBI ground out. Elizabeth Moul then poked a single to right,
scoring Bilski, tying the game at two.
The Green and White recaptured the lead with an uprising in the
fifth. Sophomore Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) stroked a sharp double to left center
to kick start the rally. After a Megan Markland (Havre de
Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) sacrifice bunt moved Schlorff
to third, Hannah Hugel
(Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) lifted a short single to shallow
left, scoring Schlorff with the first run of the inning.
Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney)
scored Hugel with a sinking line drive to right that turned into a
triple as the York lead grew to 5-2. Senior Heather Bormann
(Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) then scored Barwick with her
conference-leading eighth sacrifice fly of the year.
The Mustangs got a run back in the top of the sixth as they
knocked Therres from the game but freshman Corrrine Majczan
(Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) came in, got out of
the jam and then allowed one hit in the top of the seventh before
getting three outs to earn her third save of the year.
Therres picked up the win as she went 5-plus innings, allowing
three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. She improves
to 22-3 overall as her school record for victories in a season
continues to climb. Majczan allowed two hits with a strikeout in
two innings.
Julianne Roper went the route for the Mustangs as she allowed
five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk in six
innings. She falls to 8-4 with the loss.
Barwick and Schlorff led the Spartans with two hits each.
Barwick added an RBI and a run scored while Schlorff scored a run
for York. Therres was 1-for-2 with two RBI on her home run while
Hugel and Bormann also drove in runs for the Green and White.
Bilski led the Mustangs with two hits and two runs scored while
Bandzwolek had a hit and a pair of RBI.
The Spartans advance to face the winner of the Hood College/Mary
Washington first round game on Thursday in York. The Blazers and
Eagles square off Wednesday as they were delayed by rain on
Tuesday. Game time on Thursday in York is set for 4:00 pm.
