KISSIMMEE,
FLA – The York College softball team used a dramatic
Kristen Gray (Mickelton, N.J./Kingsway Regional)
walk-off double to kick start another doubleheader sweep as the
Spartans remained perfect with two wins on Friday in Kissimmee,
Florida. The Spartans' used Gray's game-winning hit to
defeat St. Benedict 5-4 in the opener and the Green and White
completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Beloit in the nightcap.
York improves to 10-0 overall with two games remaining on their
spring trip.
In the opener, the Spartans were very sluggish
coming off a three-game Thursday. St. Benedict jumped on the
Spartans early with a run in the top of the first. York tied the
game in the bottom of the second on a Meghan Boyer (Smyrna,
Del./Smyrna) RBI single.
The Blazers took a 4-1 lead in the top of the
fifth as Alyssa Kubesh ripped a base loaded double to score three
runs. The Green and White answered with a pair of runs in the
bottom of the frame as Megan Van Meter (Hanover,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) doubled in two runs, cutting the
Spartan deficit to one run at 4-3.
After a quiet sixth inning and a 1-2-3 top of
the seventh, the Spartans began their game-winning rally with a Van
Meter single followed by a Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St.
Vincent Pallotti) single to put runners at the corners.
Smith stole second and then Gray doubled to end the game and keep
the Spartans perfect.
Van Meter continues to be hot in the four spot
for the Spartans as she was 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run
scored. Catcher Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) added three hits and a run scored while
Gray was 2-for-4 with the two RBI. Boyer was the fourth Spartan
with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Kubesh paced St. Benedict with two hits and
three RBI. Elle Borba was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman Corrine Majczan (Center
Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) earned the win in relief of
starter Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas
Stone). Majczan tossed two shutout innings, allowing two
hits with two walks and a strikeout. Therres pitched the first five
innings, allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and three
strikeouts in her stint.
Borba started the game for St. Benedict and
was very good as she allowed one run on six hits. Emma Alwin
suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on seven hits with a
walk in her 2.1 innings of work.
In game two, the Spartans
jumped on Beloit early with a three-run first inning. The inning
was highlighted by a two-run Van Meter double and a Gray RBI ground
out.
Beloit got one run back in the bottom of the
first as Majczan made the start in place of a tired Therres. York
got that run back in the top of the second and then blew the game
open with a three run third inning. Boyer had a bases loaded triple
in the inning to account for the three York runs.
That would be more than enough for Majczan as
she hurled her first collegiate complete game. She allowed two runs
on six hits. She struck out eight and one walk. Majczan improves to
3-0 with the win.
Allegerra Stanton suffered the loss as she
allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits with three walks in 2.2
innings of work. Katy Sandt allowed a run on four hits with a
strikeout and walk in 4.1 innings.
Freshman Hannah Hugel (Paoli,
Pa./Conestoga) continues to have a great start to her
career as she was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Van Meter added two
hits, two more RBI and a run scored. Boyer was 1-for-3 with three
RBI and a run scored.
McKenzie Falker, Sarah Stariha, and Sandt each
had two hits while Falker and Sandt each had an RBI for Beloit.
The Spartans conclude their trip Saturday with
a double dip against Coe and Aurora. Coe is ranked fifth in the
nation and is coming off their first-ever national championship
game appearance as they fell to Messiah last spring. The Spartans
and Kohawks square off at 11:00 am. Aurora is coming off a 31-7
season and opens their season at 11:00 am before playing York at
1:00 pm.
