FREDERICK, MD – The York College softball squad continued
their impressive 2010 season as they swept Hood College in a key
Capital Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday in Fredrick, MD.
The Spartans won game one 3-0 and then completed the sweep with a
3-2 decision in the nightcap.
The Spartans improve to 24-2 overall and 5-1 in the CAC while
the Blazers fall to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the CAC.
In the opener, the Spartans jumped on the Blazers early.
Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) drew a walk
to lead off the game. After a sacrifice bunt moved Lawrence to
second, Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick
Memorial) drove in her fellow senior captain with an RBI
single to left center as the Spartans took the early lead.
The Green and White added to the lead an inning later as pitcher
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone)
blasted a home run to left field to lead off the frame. The home
run was the second of the year for the Spartan sophomore.
Those runs would be more than enough for Therres as she was
brilliant. The shutout was her eighth of the year as she scattered
three hits, struck out three and walked one. The win raises
Therres' record to 19-1. The 19 wins continues to best her
own school record as she is now three wins better than the second
best single-season mark of 16.
The Spartans added single run in the sixth as Bormann blasted a
solo homer to center, providing for the Spartans' final 3-0
margin of victory.
Bormann led the offense, as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a
run scored. Therres was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and junior Karen Carr
(Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) each had a pair of hits for the
Spartans.
Jordan Wolford took the loss for Hood as she allowed three runs
on nine hits in seven innings as she falls to 4-5. She walked four
and struck out two in the loss.
Bridgetter Ringley led the Blazer game one offense, as she was
2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Pinch hitter Taylor Grimmell had a
pinch-hit single for the Blazers' other hit.
Game two was another tightly contested game. The Spartans found
themselves down early as the Blazers finally reached Therres for a
run in the bottom of the second courtesy of an Erin McNally RBI
single.
York wasted little time in responding as they plated a pair of
runs in the top of the third. The uprising all came with two outs
as Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney)
singled to left. After Bormann walked, Megan Van Meter
(Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) laced a single down the
right field line, scoring Barwick, tying the game at one. Therres
then gave the Spartans the lead when she doubled to center, scoring
Bormann with the second run of the inning.
Freshman Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) relieved Therres in the bottom of the third and
immediately found herself in a bases loaded situation but she was
able to extricate herself from the jam unscathed as the York lead
remained 2-1.
Barwick singled with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth,
plating Meghan Boyer (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) with
the Spartans third run of the game.
The Spartans had a chance to extend their lead in the top of the
fifth as they loaded the bases but Blazer pitcher Ringley got
herself out of the uprising with a pop up to second, ending the
Spartan threat.
The Blazers got an unearned run in the sixth inning as a pair of
Spartan errors in the inning allowed Hood to push across their
second run of the game. The Spartans, who boast a CAC-leading .982
fielding percentage, finished the game with an uncharacteristic
three errors.
Majczan closed the door in the seventh as she picked up her
fifth win of the year. She allowed an unearned run on five hits
with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings of action in
relief of Therres. Therres allowed an unearned run on five hits
with no walks or strikeouts as she got a no-decision in her two
innings of action.
Ringley took the loss as she allowed three runs, two earned, on
nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of
work. She falls to 3-5 with the loss.
Barwick paced the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-4 with an RBI
and a run scored. Van Meter was 1-for-3 with an RBI while Bormann
was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Eight different Spartans had at
least one hit in the nine-hit Spartan attack.
Casey Dunny, Wolford, Ringley, and McNally each had two hits for
the Blazers. McNally had the lone Hood RBI while Ringley and Kelly
Gafner each scored
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to
nationally ranked Salisbury to face the Sea Gulls in a Capital
Athletic Conference contest. Game time for game one of the CAC
doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm.
