YORK, PA – The York College softball team
continued their torrid start to the season as they opened their
Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of
Stevenson University on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon in York. The
Spartans won game one 15-1 in five innings and then concluded the
sweep with a 9-6 win in the nightcap.
The Spartans improved to 19-1 overall for the best start in the
history of the Spartan softball program. York is now 2-0 in the CAC
while the Mustangs fall to 1-2 in the CAC and 9-4 overall.
Game one started with the Spartans scoring three runs in the
bottom of the first. All three runs came with two outs in the frame
as Mustang starter Sarah Moelter struck out the first two Spartans
she faced. Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick
Memorial) began the uprising with a single to third. She
stole second before Megan Van Meter (Hanover,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) walked. Kelly Smith
(Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) laced a sharp double
to left center, plating Bormann and Van Meter with the first two
runs of the game. Smith moved to third on a wild pitch before
Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick) singled to
left as York led 3-0 after one.
The Mustangs got their lone run of the first game in the second
but it could have been worse as Spartan starter Brittany
Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) got out of a bases
jam allowing just the one run.
The Spartans blew the game wide open in the bottom of the second
with a great deal of help from the Mustangs. The first two Spartans
reached base courtesy of a pair of Stevenson errors. The inning
continued as the Spartans piled on eight runs on six hits with a
total of three Stevenson errors. All eight of the runs were
unearned as the Spartans made the Mustangs pay for their defensive
miscues. Norris had the big blow in the inning with a three-run
double.
York added two runs in the third on a Cory Urkuski
(Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) two run blast as the freshman
made her first collegiate hit a memorable one. York closed out the
scoring with two more runs in the fourth, providing for the final
15-1 score.
Norris led the Spartans with two hits, four RBI and a run scored
while Smith was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was 2-for-4
with two RBI and a run scored while Urkuski was 1-for-1 with two
RBI and a run scored. Ten Spartans had at least one hit in
the 13-hit Spartan attack.
Elizabeth Moul led the Mustangs as she was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Carianne Sullivan and Stacey Rouse each had a hit for the Mustangs.
Therres earned the win as she improves to 15-0 as she worked
three innings, allowing one run on two hits with two walks.
Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) tossed the final two innings, allowing just one
hit with three strikeouts and two walks.
Moelter absorbed the loss as she allowed 15 runs, just five
earned, on 13 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
In game two, the Spartans wasted little time in getting on the
board. Bormann doubled down the line to drive in Lawrence who
walked with one out in first. Bormann eventually came around to
score on a Smith single through the left side of the infield as
York led 2-0 after one.
The Spartans added a single run in the second with a Lawrence
RBI single.
The Mustangs finally got to Majczan in the fourth but a Spartan
error in the frame made the run unearned.
The York offense exploded for a huge bottom of the fourth as
they dented the plate six times with four coming on a big grand
slam off the bat of Bormann as the senior jacked the sacks full
homer off the scoreboard in left-centerfield. The Spartans led 9-1
heading into the top of the fifth.
The Mustangs were down to their last out in the fifth before
Desirae Sullivan hit a grand slam of her own to prevent the
Spartans from winning in the fifth. That home run only prolonged
the game as the Spartans posted the three-run win.
Majczan earned the win as she allowed five runs, four earned, on
seven hits in her five innings of work. She struck out three and
walked one, as she is now 4-1.
Sullivan started the game and allowed three runs on six hits in
1.2 innings of action. She falls to 1-2 with the loss.
Bormann led the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-4 with five RBI
and two runs scored. Smith was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored
while Norris and Lawrence each had two knocks. Lawrence added two
runs scored and an RBI while Norris contributed an RBI.
Sullivan led the Mustangs with her four RBI. Lisa Bilski,
Jessica Bandzwolek, and Moul each had two hits for Stevenson.
The Spartans continue their season-high 12-game home stand with
a Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against the
University of Mary Washington. Game one is slated for a 12:30 first
pitch.
