YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse team
put on an offensive showcase Tuesday afternoon, topping visiting
Arcadia 17-5 in York. The Spartans improve their 2010 season mark
to 5-4 while the Knights drop to 0-3 on the year.
The Green and White put together an all-around offensive game as
nine players scored, six of which notched multiple goals.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) posted an exceptional performance, recording two
goals and three assists for a game-high five points. Rookie
standout Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern)
tallied four points of her own, on three scores and one helper, as
she now sits atop the Spartan leaders in goals scored with 30 on
the season.
Rookie defender Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) splashed her name throughout the stat sheet. She
totaled six caused turnovers, five ground balls, and three draw
controls as Vautier won numerous possessions for the Spartan
side.
Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), one
of York's three captains this season, got in on the
exceptional-performance act with two goals, one assist, and a
game-high seven ground balls as well as a trio of draw
controls.
The Spartans took control of the game early as Wayson scored just
40 seconds after the opening whistle. Fellow freshman
Lauren Kula (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas
Johnson) gave York a 2-0 lead 1:06 later, converting a
free position shot.
Arcadia's Stephanie Holguin brought the visitors to within
one, scoring on a free position shot of her own, with 26:46 left in
the first half.
York would then embark on a 7-1 run over the stanza's next
18:04, a spurt that included a pair of scores by Molly
Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), to take a
commanding 9-2 lead heading into the break.
The Green and White never looked back from there, notching the
second half's first six goals. That sixth tally came from
junior Katie Bowers (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) who
notched her first of the year, finishing off one of Kanzler's
three assists to give York a 15-2 advantage with 15:16 left to
play. York then took their collective foot “off the
gas” and cruised to a 17-5 victory.
Dominant in all facets of the contest, the Spartans registered 40
shots to Arcadia's 15, picked up ten more ground balls
(30-20), and snagged 18 of the game's 24 draw controls.
For the Knights Holguin scored three times while Jenni Groves
tallied twice. Arcadia netminder Evelyn Ciaburri played valiantly
in the cage as she recorded 12 saves for the Knights.
Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and
Tina Nicklas (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) split
time in goal for the Spartans. Evans notched a pair of saves in the
first half while Nicklas stopped three shots in the latter
frame.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 27, when they
travel to Frederick, Md. for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt
with Hood. The CAC contest is slated for a noon start.
