YORK, PA – Despite the unseasonably gorgeous weather
conditions on Saturday in south central Pennsylvania, the York
College women's lacrosse team was handed a not-so-sunny 19-8
defeat by visiting #23 Mary Washington. The loss drops the
Spartans' 2010 record back to .500 at 4-4, including a 0-3
mark in Capital Athletic Conference action, while the Eagles
improve to 5-2 overall and a flawless 3-0 in the league.
York started the game with a promising effort as junior attack
Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) put the Spartans up 1-0 just 1:01 into the contest.
Starting in her second game of the season, Kerrigan provided the
Green and White with an offensive spark as she would go on to notch
four points in the contest.
Unfortunately for the home squad, it would not take long for
their guests to respond. Mary Washington knotted the game at one
just 17 seconds late on Brittany Butler's 12th
score of the season.
Butler would tally again at the 26:27 mark of the opening
stanza, giving the Eagles their first lead a 2-1.
Undaunted early, the Spartans answered Butler's
back-to-back tallies just 31 seconds later. Rookie Leah
Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) finished a feed
from Kerrigan to tie the score at two.
Katie Wallis then swung the momentum back to Mary
Washington's side as she tallied the Eagles' third of
the day before Lauren Callison put the visitors up 4-2.
With 21:18 left in the frame, Spartan freshman sensation
Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) tallied her
26th score of the year. Kerrigan again set up the goal
as she found Wayson for her second assist of the contest.
However, it was at this point that Mary Washington took over the
game. The Eagles embarked on a torrid 10-2 run to close out the
first half and take a commanding 14-5 lead heading into the break.
Allie Kimmelman was the catalyst behind the deluge of offense as
she recorded a goal and six assists during the extended spurt.
The second half would prove a much more subdued affair as the
squads combined for a mere eight goals over the latter 30 minutes.
Three of those eight came from the crosse of Mary
Washington's Catherine Kennedy as she upped her season total
to a remarkable 31 goals.
For the game, the Eagles held a significant 38-23 lead in shots,
holding the Spartans to a mere eight in the first half. Mary
Washington picked up 33 ground balls to York's 23 while
grabbing four more draw controls than their hosts, 16-12.
Both Kennedy and Katie Wallis tallied six times for the visitors
while Kimmelman posted eight helpers. Leigh Ann Redefer takes the
win in the cage after making two saves over her 30 minutes before
being relieved by Kathryn Stiltz who totaled six saves. Ellen
Bitkowski picked up a game-high seven ground balls and caused a
trio of turnovers.
Schultz and Kerrigan paced the Spartans offensively. Schultz
notched four goals for the Spartan side while Kerrigan notched two
scores and two helpers. Schultz also nabbed six ground balls, four
draw controls, and caused five Eagle turnovers. Rookie defender
Katie Vautier (Harwood, Md./Archbishop Spalding)
caused four turnovers and collected three ground balls.
York will look to get back into the win column when they host
Arcadia on Tuesday, March 23. The Spartans and Knights are slated
for a 4:00 p.m. tilt at York's Kinsley Field.
