YORK, PA - The York College softball team
(15-1) opened the 2010 home season with decisive double header
victories over the Juniata Eagles (6-5) on Thursday afternoon. The
Spartans posted the win by scores of 12-0 and 11-5.
Game one of the two game set was an offensive and defensive
showcase of York's talents.
The Green and White tallied runs quickly and often, opening the
game with a three run first inning. York's leadoff batter
Hannah Hugel (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) was
walked, and then made it to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty).
Shortstop Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./ Brick
Memorial) stepped to the plate and drilled her first of
three triples on the day to deep right center field, driving in
Hugel on the play. Bormann would go on to score in the inning.
York recorded three more runs in the second before scoring six
in the third. During the inning eight batters reached base, two by
base on balls, setting up junior Kristen Gray (Mickleton,
N.J./Kingsway Regional). The first baseman then promptly
emptied the bases with double down the right field line.
In the circle, pitcher Brittany Therres (Hughesville,
Md./Thomas Stone) held the Eagles to two hits during the
game while striking out three.
The Spartans returned for the second game of the double header
facing their first deficit of the afternoon, 3-2, entering the
bottom of the third inning.
From there York took control rallying to score two runs in the
inning, putting them up 4-3. The runs were a product of third
baseman Kelly Smith's (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) RBI single to center field, driving in Gray and
Hugel.
The Green and White put the game out of reach with a five-run
fourth inning, which featured four different Spartans driving in a
run. Erin O'Leary (Coatsville, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan), Bormann, Meghan Van Meter (Hanover,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Smith all contributed to the
offensive outburst.
Highlighting the Spartans' exceptional defensive effort,
senior Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick)
made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory to put an end to
the sixth inning and stranding an Eagle on base.
Therres picked up her second win of the afternoon improving to
12-0 on this season. She allowed just six hits and one earned run
during her two appearances today.
Led by first year head coach Nicki Starry, the Spartans are off
to their best start since the 2001 season when York began the year
with a dazzling 17-0 record.
The Green and White return to action at home on Saturday, March
20, against Mt. Aloysius. The first pitch will be delivered at 1:00
p.m. The double header will be the second of six twin bills over
the next ten days.
