SELINSGROVE, PA – The York College softball team returned
to action after a relaxing 10-day break and remained red hot as the
Spartans notched a doubleheader sweep of Susquehanna University on
Tuesday afternoon in Selinsgrove, Pa. The Spartans won game one 4-3
and then completed the broom job with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
The Spartans improve to 13-1 overall while the Crusaders fall to
7-3.
The Green and White got single runs in the first and third
innings to take the early lead. In the first, Heather
Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) walked with two outs,
stole second and scored on a Megan Van Meter (Hanover,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) RBI single.
In the third, Bormann ripped an RBI single to give York the 2-0
lead.
The Crusaders got to Spartan ace Brittany Therres
(Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) for three runs in the
bottom of the fifth, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead.
The Spartans continued their penchant for late-game rallies and
Tuesday's opener was no different. Senior captains
Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Bormann
led the Spartans to the uprising. Lawrence singled and scored when
Bormann stroked a triple to tie the game at three with one out in
the seventh. Van Meter then squeezed home Bormann with the game
winner, giving the Spartans the 4-3 lead.
Therres retired the Crusaders in order in the bottom of the
seventh to preserve the win.
Therres tossed the complete game, allowing three runs on nine
hits with two strikeouts. Cara Swerdlow took the loss as she
allowed four runs on eighth hits with six strikeouts and three
walks. She falls to 3-2 with the loss.
Bormann led the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-3 with two RBI
and two runs scored. Van Meter had two RBI and a single while
junior captain Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) added two hits to the Spartan offense.
Lisa Finizio and Deanna Anderson each had a pair of hits to pace
the Crusaders. Anderson also had an RBI and a run scored while
Finizio had a run scored of her own. Kelli Holota and Shelly Landis
each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, the Spartans had 12 hits but could only plate
four runs as they left eight runners stranded in the win.
York got single runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth
innings. In the second, Megan Markland (Havre de Grace,
Md./Havre de Grace) had an RBI single but the Green and
White left two runners on base. In the third, Bormann had a
sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Spartans.
York added to the lead on a Hannah Hugel (Paoli,
Pa./Contestoga) RBI single in the fourth. They closed out
their scoring with a Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Crusaders knocked Therres from the game in the sixth but
freshman Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) came in and closed the door, tossing the final
inning and a third as she recorded her first collegiate save.
Therres improves to 10-0 with the win as she allowed a run on
six hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Majczan struck out two
and walked one in her 1.1 innings of action to pick up the save.
Sarah Hoffman suffered her first loss as she allowed four runs
on 12 hits with two walks and a strikeout. She falls to 3-1 for the
campaign.
Smith led the 12-hit Spartan attack, as she was 3-for-4
including her fourth and fifth doubles of the year. Kristen
Gray (Mickelton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) added two hits
while Van Meter was the third Spartan with multiple hits as she was
2-for-4 with a run scored.
Landis had two hits to pace the Crusader offense.
The Spartans are slated to open their home campaign on Thursday
afternoon as they host Juniata College in a non-conference twin
bill. That doubleheader kicks off a six-date, 12-game home stand
that will carry the Spartans through the remainder of March. Game
one is slated to start at 3:00 pm in York.
