YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse team
fell 21-3 Friday afternoon in York as they were simply overwhelmed
by an exceptionally talented Salisbury squad, a team which carries
Division III's #2 ranking. The loss drops the Green and White
to 3-3 on the year, including two losses in Capital Athletic
Conference play, while the Sea Gulls push their flawless record to
6-0 (2-0 CAC).
From the opening draw control, the game proved to be all
Salisbury. The Sea Gulls posted the contest's first three
scores, courtesy of Aileen McCausland and two from Jessica
Chmielewski, to go up 3-0 by the 21:43 mark.
The Spartans had trouble mounting an attack against the prolific
Salisbury squad, as York's first venture into Sea Gull
territory came after more than five minutes had already ticked off
the first-half clock.
Despite York's offensive troubles, freshman sensation
Kimmy Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) did get the
Green and White on the board at the 20:19 mark of the first frame.
Wayson's free position score cut Salisbury's lead to a
manageable 3-1.
That two-goal margin would quickly balloon to ten however, as the
Sea Gulls poured on the offense. Salisbury tallied the game's
next eight goals to take an 11-1 lead with 7:08 left to play in the
half. Of those eight tallies, which were scored by seven different
players, all eight were assisted.
York did break Salisbury's spurt late in the first half on
Meg Foy's (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) sixth goal of the season.
The Spartans would put together back-to-back scores as Wayson
tallied on yet another free position attempt just after the
halftime break. The rookie now leads the Green and White with a
remarkable 22 goals on the year.
That brief two-goal run however, would not spark the Spartan
attack as Salisbury responded with nine straight tallies to close
out the game.
For the contest, the visitors owned a hulking 39-8 lead in shots
and a 24-17 advantage in ground balls. Salisbury also won a
majority of the draw controls, 17-9, while going 14-for-14 in clear
attempts.
The Sea Gulls spread out their scoring as 13 different players
found the back of the net. Maggie Roundy put together a quality
offensive effort with three goals and two assists while Allie
Wheatley scored three times.
For the Spartans, senior captain Kelly Vrana (West Islip,
N.Y./St. John the Baptist) collected three draw controls
and a pair of ground balls while freshman Leah Schultz
(Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) grabbed four ground balls
and two draw controls.
The Green and White will look to get back on track on Tuesday,
March 16, when they travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. to face Susquehanna
in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference tilt.
