KISSIMMEE,
FLA – Freshly minted CAC Player-of-the-Week Brittany
Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) twirled a
no-hitter against Gwynedd-Mercy as the York College softball squad
swept a double header on Monday afternoon in Kissimmee, Florida.
The Spartans opened the day with a 7-5 win over St. Benedict before
Therres spun her gem in the nightcap. The Spartans improve to 4-0
overall with the two victories.
In the nightcap win, the sophomore missed a
perfect game with her walk to lead off hitter Maggie McSpadden in
the top of the first. Therres was brilliant as she then retired 18
straight Griffins to post the no-no.
Against Gwynedd-Mercy, the Spartan offense got
a pair of runs in the first to give Therres some breathing room.
The York offense took a four-inning hiatus before closing out the
Griffins with a six-run sixth inning, providing for the final eight
run margin.
Therres struck out seven and walked one as she
improves to 3-0 with her second complete game shutout in her last
three starts.
McSpadden suffered the loss as she allowed
eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with three walks and a
strikeout in her 5.2 innings of work.
Senior captain Heather Bormann (Brick,
N.J./Brick Memorial) led the Spartan offense with two
hits, two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Hannah Hugel
(Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) added two hits and a pair of runs
scored while junior Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) was the third Spartan with multiple hits as she
was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
In the opener, the Spartans got on the board
one batter into the game as Sam Lawrence (Bethlehem,
Pa./Liberty) doubled, stole second and scored on a passed
ball. The game remained a one-run affair until the top of the
fourth when the Spartans exploded for five runs. The big blow in
the game came when Bormann plated two with a single while
Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional)
and Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Arbishop
Spalding) also had RBI singles in the frame.
Therres allowed her first two runs of the year
in the bottom of the fourth but York got a single run back in the
top of the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, freshman
Corrine Majczan (Center Valley, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) relieved Therres and St. Benedict got to the
freshman for a trio of runs, cutting the Spartan lead to 7-5
through five innings. Therres re-entered the game and cruised
through the final two innings to close out the win.
Therres threw a total of six innings, allowing
two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Majczan
allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits with a walk in her one
inning stint.
Laura Althoff took the loss as she surrendered
seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits with three walks and a
strikeout. Elle Borba threw two scoreless
innings of relief for St. Benedict.
Five Spartans had two hits in the win as
Lawrence, Hugel, Van Meter, Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick), and Brittany Schlorff (Hatboro,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) contributed to the 12-hit Spartan
attack. Lawrence scored two runs and drove in another while Van
Meter had an RBI. Norris scored twice while Bormann plated a pair
on one hit.
Alyssa Kubesh led St. Benedict as she was
2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Beth Hanson was 1-for-3
with two RBI while Kristen Herges contributed two hits and run
scored.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday
morning when they face Ferrum in a traditional doubleheader. The
Spartans and Panthers start game one at 9:00 am in Kissimmee.
