YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse team
suffered a 14-11 Capital Athletic Conference loss Wednesday evening
to visiting Stevenson University. The Mustangs tallied six of the
game's final seven goal en route to their second victory in
as many tries this season. The Spartans fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1
in CAC action.
The Green and White had an outstanding first 45 minutes of the
60-minute contest. In a back-and-forth affair, the home squad took
a 10-8 advantage midway through the second half courtesy of three
consecutive scores. Down 8-7, sophomore Meaghan Doak
(Pylesville, Md./Harford Tech) knotted the game at eight
with 21:22 remaining in the contest after a great Kimberly
Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) dish.
Wayson would then provide the Spartans with a two-goal advantage
by the 14:19 mark. The Spartan rookie, who tallied a total of four
goals against Stevenson, cashed in on a free position shot to give
York a 9-8 lead before utilizing a great individual effort to come
from behind the Mustang goal and slot home York's 10th of the
afternoon.
Despite York's lead, the visitors turned it on offensively
during the final 14 minutes of the game. Lauren Zegowitz began the
Mustang comeback with 11:50 left in the game. Zegowitz bulled her
way down the field until unleashing an attempt from the right side
of the goal that found netting.
A mere 45 seconds later, standout Lisa Baker, who had been quiet
throughout the game, tied the score at 10. Baker scooped up a loose
ball from behind the Spartan net before coming around the front
side and hammering home her fifth goal of the season.
Zegowitz and Baker officially opened the floodgates as each would
add to the Mustang total. Zegowitz put the Mustangs up 11-10 before
Baker tallied back-to-back scores to give the visitors a 13-10
advantage with 6:52 remaining.
Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough),
another of York's talented freshmen, got the Spartans back on
track as she scored off an Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore,
Md./Perry Hall) assist with a manageable 6:12 on the
clock. Kanzler found herself free on the left side of the goal
before Schultz broke open right in front. Kanzler fed the rookie
who whirled and notched her second goal of her young career.
Alas, that effort would not begin a Spartan run as Megan Weiss
dashed any thoughts of a comeback. Weiss would finish a feed from
Zegowitz with 4:19 remaining, providing the final 14-11 score.
For the game, Stevenson held a 29-21 lead in shots while the
Spartans owned a slight 20-18 edge in ground balls.
Wayson continued her offensive onslaught as she led the York squad
with four goals on the afternoon, giving the current CAC
Women's Lacrosse Player-of-the-Week, a team-high seven goals
for 2010. Schultz, Doak, and Kasie White (Glen Burnie,
Md./North County) each added a pair of scores while
Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North)
tallied once. Spartan captain Kelly Vrana (West Islip,
N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the defensive effort with
four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper
Kelsey Evans (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) totaled seven saves in the
loss.
For the visitors, Baker, Zegowitz, and Weiss each scored three
times to pace the offense. Each of Baker's scores came within
the Mustangs' final surge. Zegowitz also notched four ground
balls while Corrinn Thompson and Lauren Taguding each garnered a
pair of caused turnovers. Jenny Schroeder captured the win in net
for the Mustangs making six stops on the day.
The Spartans now hit the road as they will embark on their spring
break trip to Dallas, Texas. While there, the Green and White are
slated to play two contests beginning with Lycoming on Wednesday,
March 3.
