FREDERICKSBURG,
VA – The York College women's soccer saw their four
game win streak come to an end as the Spartans tied the University
of Mary Washington Eagles 1-1 in a key Capital Athletic Conference
contest in Fredericksburg, VA on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans
are now 7-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference while the Eagles
are 6-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the league.
The two teams took turns taking momentum in
the early stages of the game. The Eagles' first shot hit the
post just 1:52 into the game. The Eagles held a 5-2 edge in shots
when Erin Mummert (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove)
fed senior Meghan Rowland (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) for a goal on York's third shot of the
contest. The tally was Rowland's second of the year and came
in the game's 40th minute.
The Spartans held onto the lead through
halftime and deep into the second half. Both teams had four shots
through the opening 40 minutes of the second half as the Spartans
were attempting to hold off the hard charging Eagles late.
Unfortunately for the Green and White, the Eagles' fifth shot
of the half found the back of the net as Amy Olson tallied an
unassisted goal with three minutes remaining in regulation.
The first overtime featured one Eagle shot on
goal and a corner kick for the Spartans. The second extra 10
minutes saw Allie Jensen (Parkville,
Md./Parkville) get a shot on goal and the Eagles get an
attempt from Sunny Herold that went high over the cross bar.
The Eagles finished the game with an 11-8 edge
in total shots including a 7-5 margin in shots on goal. The
Spartans had six corner kicks to just one for the Eagles.
Spartan sophomore Sarah Spanarkel
(Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) is now 7-1-1 as she
made seven saves in her 110 minutes of work. Eagle goalie Tina
Brehm made four stops in her time in net for the hosts.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday night
when they travel to Messiah to face off against the nationally
ranked Falcons. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm.
