HUNTINGDON, PA – The York College
softball squad concluded their 2009 season with a split at Juniata
College on Monday afternoon in Huntingdon, PA. The Eagles won game
one 4-1 and the Spartans captured game two, 4-1, in eight innings.
The Spartans conclude the campaign with a mark of 30-15. The 30
wins are just two short of the school record established in 2001.
It is just the second time in school history that the Spartans have
reached the 30-win plateau. The Eagles now stand at 22-10 for the
season.
In game one, the Eagles reached Spartan starter Brittany
Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) for three runs in
the bottom of the first. The Juniata rally with two outs as Liz
Schmitt had an RBI single and Callandra McCool recorded a two-run
double, giving the hosts the early lead.
Juniata starter Alyssa Erb kept the Spartans off the board until
the top of the fifth as Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick
Memorial) singled in Kelly Smith (Riverdale,
Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) with York's first run.
After Bormann's RBI single, Erb retired the next seven
Spartans to record the win.
Juniata got an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to ice
the win.
Erb earned the victory as she allowed a run on six hits with
four strikeouts and a walk in seven innings of work. She improves
to 13-6 overall.
Therres took another hard luck loss as she allowed four runs,
three earned, on nine hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in
six innings of work. Therres falls to 14-9 overall. She continues
to lead in the nation in walks per seven innings as she has walked
just eight batters in 156 innings of action. Therres has struck out
87 during her outstanding first year in the green and white.
Offensively, Melissa Moffat and Schmitt each had two hits and a
run scored for the Eagles. McCool had a pair of RBI while Schmitt
also had an RBI for the Eagles.
Bormann was the lone Spartan with multiple hits as she was
2-for-3 with an RBI. Therres had the Spartans' lone extra
base hit with her fourth inning double.
In the nightcap, the two teams each scored runs in the fourth
inning. The Spartans scored their run on a Therres RBI single while
the Eagles got their tally on a Spartan error.
The game remained tied until the eighth inning when the
tiebreaker took effect. The Spartans took the lead on a Smith
sacrifice fly. The Spartans then broke it open with a pair of
unearned runs with two outs as the Spartans took the 4-1 lead.
Spartan starter Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas
Johnson) wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth
as she held on for her team-leading 16th win. Koehl allowed one
unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk in a
dominate performance.
Pam Heinrichs suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on
seven hits in her eight innings of work. She falls to 8-3 with the
loss.
Freshman Caitlin Keppler (Owings, Md./Northern)
led the Spartans as she was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Bormann
was 1-for-4 with a run scored while Therres was 1-for-3 with an
RBI.
Stacy Nagy was 3-for-4 with a run scored as she had three of the
Eagles' five hits. Tara Carl had Juniata's lone RBI.
The Spartans have a very bright future as the roster has not one
senior with the entire roster able to return for 2010.
