CENTER VALLEY, PA – The York College
softball team took to the road on Sunday and came home with a
doubleheader sweep of Desalts University in Center Valley, PA. The
Spartans won game one 4-1 and completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in
the nightcap.
The Spartans improve to 29-14 overall while the Bulldogs fall to
23-13 with the two losses.
In the opener, York got on the board in the second as
Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson)
jacked a two-out solo home run, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Koehl kick started the Spartans' three-run fifth inning as
she doubled to lead off the frame. The Spartans tallied three runs
in the frame as they pushed the lead to 4-0, giving starter
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone)
some breathing room.
The Bulldogs spoiled Therres' shutout in the seventh as
they got a run on two hits to provide for the final 4-1 score.
Therres earned the win as she tossed another complete game to
raise her record to 14-8. Therres allowed a run on five hits with
two strikeouts and no walks.
Katie Morrissey absorbed the loss as she allowed four runs on
seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk in seven innings.
Morrissey falls to 12-6 with the setback.
Caitlin Keppler (Owings, Md./Northern),
Therres, and Koehl each banged out a pair of hits for the Spartans.
Keppler was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Therres was also 2-for-3.
Koehl was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI including her
seventh home run of the year.
Kelly Moran led the Bulldogs as she was 2-for-3 while Christine
Petrilla had a pinch-hit RBI single for the hosts.
In game two, both teams scored in the second frame. York's
run came off the bat of Koehl as he blasted another solo home run.
The Bulldogs got their run courtesy of a triple and an RBI ground
out.
The Spartans recaptured the lead in the third as Julie
Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick) singled, stole second
and scored on an error as the Spartans led 2-1 through two and a
half innings.
DeSales tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth as they
loaded the bases with two outs. Jen Lococo singled to right to
drive in a run but Kerri Andrews was gunned down at home to keep
the game tied at two.
York recaptured the lead in the sixth as Meghan Van
Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) ripped a two-run
single, putting York back on top, 4-2.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the seventh as Jamie Pfitzenmayer
tripled and scored on a throwing error. Therres relieved Koehl in
the circle and got the final two outs of the game for the save.
Koehl earned the win as she allowed three runs on nine hits in
6.1 innings. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. Koehl
improves to 15-6 with the win. Therres earned her first save of the
season with her two third of an inning of work.
Jen Lococo suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on five
hits with three strikeouts and two walks in her seven-inning stint.
She falls to 10-5 with the loss.
Van Meter led the Spartans as she was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Koehl banged out her team-leading eighth home run while Therres was
1-for-3 with a run scored.
Pftizenmayer led the Bulldogs as she was 3-for-4 with two runs
scored. Amanda Kensecki, Lococo and Kate Steiner each contributed
two hits to the DeSales offensive attack.
The Spartans close out their 2009 campaign on Monday afternoon
as they travel to Juniata to face the Eagles in a non-conference
doubleheader. Game one is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
