FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The 2009 York
College women's lacrosse season came to a close Saturday
afternoon as the Spartans fell 18-5 at Mary Washington in the first
round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Green and
White finish the year with a 7-10 mark while the Eagles move on the
league semifinals owning a mark of 12-6.
The hosts jumped out front with a
3-0 run beginning with 23:02 left in the first half. Allie
Kimmelman had a hand in each of the first three scores, as she
notched two goals and assisted on the third.
York would manage to get back to
within two at 4-2 with 11:50 to play in the opening stanza behind
scores from Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md./Harford
Tech) and Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis
Scott Key).
That two-goal margin proved to be
as close as the Spartans could get at Mary Washington kept up the
offensive pressure. The Eagles posted four-goal spurts on three
separate occasions throughout the contest to distance themselves
from the Spartans.
For the game, Mary Washington held
a 38-10 lead in shots and a 40-24 advantage in ground balls. The
Eagles gained most of the possession throughout the contest,
including a 19-for-24 performance in draw controls.
Kimmelman led the hosts offensively
on the afternoon, tallying five points by way of three goals and
two assists, picking up five ground balls along the way. Catherine
Kennedy also scored three times while four other Eagles each had
two tallies. Ellen Bikowski played an exceptional contest,
collecting a game-high seven draw controls and causing four
turnovers. Goalkeeper Danni Guigli made a pair of stops over her 60
minutes of work.
Doak scored twice for the Spartans
in the final game of her rookie season. Bell, who leaves the
Spartan program as the school's all-time leader in ground
balls (195), draw controls (179), and caused turnovers (104),
performed traditionally well grabbing five ground balls and two
draw controls, while causing four turnovers. Junior Kelly
Vrana (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scooped up
four ground balls on the day. Senior goalkeeper Anne
Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) made ten saves
throughout her 60 minutes between the pipes.
The Spartans bid adieu to their
three Spartan seniors. Bell, Feustle, and Corey Hawks
(Aberdeen, Md./Harford Tech) lead the program as the first
four-year class in the program's brief history having
compiled a record of 31-37, including a school-best 11-6 mark last
season.
