SALISBURY, MD – The York College softball squad faced a
second elimination game on Saturday and, for the second time, they
advanced in the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. This
time it was a 6-0 win over Hood College. The Spartans improve to
27-11 with the win while Hood falls to 11-23.
The first two and a half innings were scoreless before the
Spartans opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Sophomore
standout Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) tripled with one out. She scored when
Heather Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial)
singled, giving the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
York blew the game open in the fourth with a four-run frame. The
uprising started with a Meghan Van Meter (Hanover,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) double to left. After Sam
Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) walked,
Caitlin Keppler (Owing, Md./Northern) moved Van
Meter and Koehl up one base each. Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) singled to center, scoring Van Meter.
Karen Carr (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) singled to
score Koehl and would come around to score on a Smith double to
left. Bormann then plated Smith with the inning's fourth run
courtesy of an RBI single.
York added their final run of the game on another Bormann RBI
single to left, providing for the final 6-0 margin of victory.
That would be more than enough for Koehl as she twirled her
seventh shutout of the year. Koehl scattered four hits with seven
strikeouts and no walks as she improves to 14-4 for the year.
Bridgette Ringley suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on
seven hits with two walks in 3.2 innings of work. She falls to 6-14
for the campaign.
Bormann paced the offense as she was 3-for-4 with three RBI
while Smith was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Carr was
1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Norris was 1-for-2 with
an RBI.
Jen Willison was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles as she was the
Hood offense. Jacquie LeMar picked up Hood's other hit with
her third inning single.
The Spartans will face Mary Washington in an elimination game on
Sunday morning at 10:00 am. The winner of that contest will face
Salisbury in the first championship game. The Spartans or Eagles
will need to beat Salisbury twice to earn the CAC championship
trophy.
