FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The York College
softball squad saw their offense silenced in the second round of
the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference tournament as the University
of Mary Washington Eagles shutout the Spartans 3-0 on Friday in
Fredericksburg, VA. The Spartans now fall into the losers bracket
of the tournament where they will face Wesley on Saturday morning.
York falls to 25-11 with the loss while the Eagles are now
24-14-1. The Eagles advance to face the top-seeded Salisbury Sea
Gulls in Saturday's second game.
The Spartans could never solve senior pitcher Kirsten Rowell as
she stymied the Green and White all day. Rowell did not allow a
base runner until Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway
Regional) singled with two outs in the fourth. The
Spartans got a lead off single in the seventh from Heather
Bormann (Brick, N.J./Brick). However, Bormann would be
erased on fielder's choice as the Spartans never got a runner
past first base in seven innings.
The Eagles got all the offense they needed in the third as they
got to Spartan starter Brittany Therres (Hughesville,
Md./Thomas Stone) for a single tally. Monique DeZarn
singled, moved to third on a double from Cathy Hull and scored on a
Morgan Lamon ground out to second base.
Mary Washington added a pair of huge insurance runs in the fifth
as Elizabeth Crowe had an RBI double while Kim Olinger added an RBI
single to center.
Hull and Amanda Adams each had multiple hits for the Eagles
while Lamon was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Crowe and
Olinger each added a hit and an RBI to the Eagle offensive effort.
Rowell earned the win as she improves to 18-5. She allowed just
the two hits as she struck out ten. She faced just two batters over
the minimum in the game.
Therres pitched well as she suffered the loss. Therres, who is
now 12-6, allowed three runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and
no walks.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday morning in
Salisbury, MD as they face Wesley in the CAC Quarterfinals. Game
one is slated for a 10:00 am start.
