YORK, PA—The York College women's
lacrosse team earned their first Capital Athletic Conference
victory of the season Saturday with a 17-2 home victory over Hood
College. The triumph brings the Spartans to an overall record of
4-7 (1-3 CAC) and dropped the Blazers to 4-5 (1-4 CAC).
The Green and White dominated every
aspect of the game from the opening whistle. Senior Megan
Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) racked up six
points on five goals and one assist to lead the scoring frenzy.
Sophomore Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) tallied four goals of her own while five other
Spartans put points on the board.
The Spartans' offensive assault
resulted in eight first-half scores before piling up nine in the
second.
Freshman Ashley Kanzler
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) struck first for the York
squad when she scored an unassisted goal 1:48 into the contest.
Kerrigan followed Kanzler's score with her first tally at
24:42.
Kanzler and Kerrigan each added another
score before Hood got on the board with a goal from Brandy Noel
with 17:39 left in the period.
From that point on, the Green and White
controlled the scoring as Bell added three of her goals, including
two consecutive scores to finish out the period. Sophomore
Katie Bowers (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) notched
her first goal of the season as the Spartans went into halftime
with a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Hood opened up the second period by
scoring early when Kelsey Blackwell put away her 23rd tally of the
season. Blackwell's score would prove to be the last time the
Blazers found the back of the Spartan net as York's defense
limited Hood to just four shots in the second period. Senior
goalkeeper Anne Feustle (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) denied Hood's offense with three
saves on nine shots throughout the game.
York's offense continued to run on
overdrive in the second period. Following Blackwell's goal, a
balanced Spartan attack resulted in nine more scores, including two
more each from Kerrigan and Bell. Junior Megan Foy (Toms
River, N.J./Toms River North), freshman Whitney
Kendall (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood),
freshman Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md./Harford
Tech), and sophomore Katie Mansell (Pasadena,
Md./Chesapeake Senior) each added a goal of their own
while Bowers notched her second tally of the game to finish out the
Spartan scoring.
For the game, the Spartans outshot the
Blazers 40-9. They also won the ground ball battle 18-10. York
showed poise and control with the ball as they limited themselves
to nine turnovers and gained 16 draw controls, while Hood gave up
15 turnovers and could only pick up five draw controls. The
Spartans were also effective at clearing the ball, as they
successfully cleared 10 times on 10 attempts.
The Spartans return to action against
Notre Dame (Md.) at Kinsley Field on Tuesday, March 31, at 4:30
p.m.
