OWINGS, MD – The York College softball
squad posted a pair of Capital Athletic Conference wins on Sunday
as they swept Stevenson University on the road as York posted a 3-2
win in the opener followed by a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. The
Spartans improve to 16-6 overall and 2-0 in the CAC while the
Mustangs fall to 10-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
In game one, the Spartans opened the scoring in the first with
an RBI double from Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway
Regional) as York seized the early lead. The Mustangs
responded by tying the game in the bottom of the first as Jessica
Bandzwolek jacked a solo home run with two outs in the frame.
Spartan pitcher Brittany Therres (Hughesville,
Md./Thomas Stone) helped her own cause in the top of the
second as she singled, stole second and scored on a Megan
Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) RBI single,
giving the Spartans the 2-1 lead.
Stevenson tied the game in the third as Laura Bedgar singled,
moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Bandzwolek RBI
single.
The Spartans got the game-winner in the top of the seventh as
Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson)
drilled a solo homer to lead off the frame. The tater is her
team-leading fifth of the year.
Therres picked up the win as she improves to 8-3 with the
complete game victory. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five
hits with seven strikeouts. Therres also walked two batters, her
first two walks in over 70 innings this season.
Julianne Roper took the loss as she allowed three runs on nine
hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. She falls to 5-5
with the loss.
Koehl led the Spartan offense as she was 2-for-4 with a run
scored and an RBI. Therres was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Van
Meter was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Heather Bormann (Brick,
N.J./Brick Memorial) also had a pair of hits for York
while Gray was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Bandzwolek was outstanding in game one as she was 3-for-3 with a
run scored and the Mustangs' two RBIs. Bedgar was 1-for-3
with a run scored while Lisa Bilski had Stevenson's other
hit.
In the nightcap, York opened the scoring with a two-run first
inning as Koehl and Julie Norris (Frederick,
Md./Frederick) each had RBI singles.
The Spartans added three runs in the fourth as Therres and
Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) each
walked in front of Van Meter. The Spartans' freshman second
baseman then ripped a three-run homer to give York a 5-0 lead.
The Mustangs spoiled the shutout with a run in the bottom of the
seventh, providing for the final 5-1 margin.
Koehl went the distance as she allowed one run on four hits with
seven shutouts and no walks. She improves to 8-3 with the victory.
Sarah Moelter started for the Mustangs and tossed the first
three innings. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits with no
walks or strikeouts. Megan Kunkel relieved Moelter in the fourth
and she allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and one
strikeout. Moelter falls to 4-4 with the loss.
The Spartan offense was led by Van Meter as she was 2-for-3 with
three RBI and a run scored. Her home run was her second of the
year. Koehl was 1-for-4 with an RBI while Norris was 1-for-3 with
an RBI of her own.
Michelle January paced the Mustangs as she was 1-for-3 with an
RBI double to plate Stevenson's lone run. Stacey Rouse also
had an extra base hit for Stevenson as she was 1-for-3 with a
double. Bilski and Mara DeLaus had the other hits, each singles,
for the Mustangs.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they
travel to the University of Mary Washington to face the Eagles in a
key CAC double dip. First pitch in game one from Fredericksburg is
set for 1:00 pm.
