YORK, PA – The York College women's
lacrosse team dropped their fourth game in a row Saturday afternoon
as #16 St. Mary's (Md.) bounced the Spartans 16-5 at Kinsley
Field. The Green and White now stand at 2-7 and 0-3 in league play
while the Seahawks used the triumph to up their season mark to 7-2
and 2-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Emily Norris led the Seahawk attack with
five goals on the day as the senior increased her season total to
19 scores. Fellow senior Lauren Carrier, who notched four scores
against the Spartans, continues to lead her squad with 30 tallies
in 2009.
St. Mary's wasted little time
to open the game's scoring as Nora Fallon-Oben kicked-off the
Seahawk barrage only 46 seconds into the contest. Norris backed up
Fallon-Oben's tally with her first of five at the 27:39 mark
to bump the Seahawk lead to 2-0.
The Spartans cut that two-goal lead
in half just over one minute later on Molly
Kerrigan's (Bel Air, Md./Institute of Notre Dame)
ninth score of her sophomore campaign.
Unfortunately for the Green and
White, their guests would tack on four more in the frame while the
Spartans only managed one – an Ashley Kanzler
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) free position goal –
with one second remaining on the first half clock.
The second period saw the Seahawks
simply take over the contest as they scored seven goals within the
frame's first 8:20, en route to ten goals in the frame. St.
Mary's commanding lead would allow them to cruise for the
remainder of the contest.
York did make a late 3-0 surge
behind two Megan Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) tallies and another from Kanzler, but the effort
proved too late for a Spartan comeback.
For the contest, the Seahawks
outshot the Spartans 35-19 while picking up four more ground balls
than their hosts, 28-24. The Spartans turned the ball over 26 times
as St. Mary's gave it away on 20 occasions.
Norris posted a game-high six
points on her five goals and one assist while she also won a trio
of draw controls. Carrier continues to be a scoring machine for the
Seahawks. Her five points came via four goals and one assist for
her 37-point total on the year. Midfielder Aubrey Mirkin grabbed
seven ground balls for the Seahawks. Freshman goalkeeper Colleen
Simpson notched the win, recording seven saves over her 52:46 of
work. Jamie Roberts relieved Simpson late in the contest and made
one save in 7:34.
Foy and Kanzler each tallied twice
to pace the Spartans' offensive effort. Foy, who now has a
team-high 17 goals on the season, also posted four ground balls,
two draw controls, and one caused turnover. Kanzler managed three
ground ball pick-ups while causing a team-high three turnovers and
going 2-for-2 in free position attempts. Senior goalkeeper
Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) takes
the loss as she made 13 saves in her 60 minutes.
The Spartans return to action on
Wednesday, March 25. The Green and White travels to Frostburg St.
for a 4:00 pm non-conference tilt against the Bobcats.
