KISSIMMEE, FL – The York College softball team opened
their 10-game stay at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, FL with a pair
of big wins on Monday. The Spartans defeated Eastern University,
8-3, and then downed Eastern Mennonite 8-0, in five innings, as the
Green and White improve to a perfect 6-0.
The Spartans opened the day with two runs in the top of the
first inning as Heather Bormann (Brick,
N.J./Brick) singled, stole second and came home on a
Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti)
RBI single. Smith would eventually come around to score on an Eagle
error as the Spartans handed freshman standout Brittany
Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to
a pair of Spartan errors. Therres surrendered three runs in the
bottom of the first but two of the three runs were unearned thanks
to the Spartan miscues.
After the second and third innings were quiet, the Spartans
fashioned an uprising in the fourth. With two outs, freshmen
Caitlin Keppler (Owings, Md./Northern) and
Megan Van Meter (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding)
started the rally with back-to-back singles. Bormann then singled
to plate Keppler and Van Meter, pushing the York advantage to 4-3.
Bormann then came home on a Smith RBI double to cap the rally.
The Spartans added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to
provide for their final 8-3 margin.
Therres was outstanding again as she went the distance, allowing
three runs, one earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no
walks. She did not walk a batter for her third straight outing.
Therres improves to 3-0 for the season.
Kristine Rosko absorbed the loss as she allowed eight runs,
seven earned, on 13 hits with one walk and a strikeout in her six
innings of work.
Smith led the Spartan offense as she was 3-for-4 with two RBI
and two runs scored. Bormann was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs
scored. Junior Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas
Johnson) and Keppler each chipped in with two hits.
Alissa Brubaker and Karen Hertzog each had two hits to pace the
Eagle offense. Hertzog drove in two runs and scored another for
Eastern.
In the game against EMU, the Spartans jumped on the Royals
early. Bormann led off the bottom of the first with a double. After
a pair of groundouts moved Bormann to third, Sam Lawrence
(Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) walked and got to second with a
stolen base. Bormann and Lawrence then came home on an RBI single
by Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway
Regional), giving York the 2-0 lead.
That 2-0 lead would be more than enough for Koehl as she was
outstanding in the circle for the Spartans. Koehl, who tossed
York's third shutout in six games, allowed just three hits in
five innings of work. She struck out one and did not walk a batter
for the Spartans as she improves to 3-0 with the win.
The Spartan offense struck again in the fourth inning. Smith had
the big blow in the frame with a two-run double. Smith would then
come around to score on a Lawrence RBI ground out.
York closed out the game in the fifth with three more runs as
the Royals committed two errors in the frame to aid the Spartan
effort. The three runs put the eight-run rule in affect as the
Spartans completed the day 2-0.
Smith had two more hits, two RBI and a run scored while Bormann
also banged out two hits, had a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Gray was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
The Royals were limited to three singles in the game as Lisa
Lee, Nicole Shelton, and Nicole Wade had EMU's hits in the
game.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday as they face Widener at
11:00 am followed by a 3:00 pm tilt against Adrian.
